Role overview
DHL Global Forwarding is looking for a Director of International Customs Operations to lead its Columbia, South Carolina facility. This position sits at a senior operational level and is responsible for directing customs brokerage entry processing teams across multiple layers of management and supervision.
The role carries end-to-end accountability for the site’s operating results and profitability, including station P&L, workflow oversight, performance management, strategic planning, KPI delivery, coaching, and team evaluation.

What you'll do
- Plan, assign, and coordinate day-to-day work so the team operates smoothly and efficiently.
- Track shipment progress in Entry Processing and Records, troubleshoot problems, and make sure issues are resolved promptly.
- Partner with Customer Service on incidents and exception handling.
- Develop strong working relationships with internal teams and external business partners.
- Review team performance regularly and put corrective action plans in place when needed.
- Identify learning gaps and create development opportunities to strengthen departmental capability.
- Act as the go-to expert for operational questions tied to managed accounts.
- Make sure onboarding is completed properly before customers move into standard service.
- Improve operational processes continuously, including offshore activities.
- Oversee HUB customer receivables and handle bad debt-related issues.
- Maintain customer relationships and lead quarterly business reviews with top accounts.
- Stay current on CBP updates and coordinate internal training, customer communication, and system changes.
- Supervise processing for International Air/Ocean entries and Northern Border Truck shipments.
- Keep all entries compliant with CBP rules and maintain an error rate under 1%.
- Manage staffing and workflow across centralized, offshore, decentralized, and vendor teams to hit KPI goals.
- Deliver budget performance through disciplined revenue and cost management.
- Work closely with senior internal stakeholders on critical issues that require cross-functional alignment.
- Support long-term strategic planning and use internal networks to drive outcomes.
- Promote collaboration, empowerment, and engagement across teams.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus at least 10 years of relevant industry experience is required.
- An active U.S. Customs Broker License is preferred.
- You should be able to set and execute a strategy for customs operations that balances compliance, customer service, commercial priorities, and shareholder value.
- Experience driving process improvement and maintaining operational standards is important.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability is needed.
- You must have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Comfort with Microsoft Office Suite and other business software is expected.
- Leadership, coaching, and people-management capability are essential.
- Solid financial understanding, including budgeting and cost control, is required.
Compensation and benefits
The posted pay range is $118,192.50 to $157,590.00+, depending on experience.
