Role Overview
The Deputy Coroner is responsible for examining death scenes to establish the cause and manner of death. This entry-level position operates under guidance from senior coroners and requires close collaboration with law enforcement, medical personnel, and related parties. The role involves both fieldwork and office duties, including responding to irregular hours.
Primary Duties
- Investigate death scenes to determine cause and manner of death.
- Assist in on-site investigations upon request from law enforcement and agencies.
- Document and record data at scenes, including logging prescription drugs.
- Collect decedent information from law enforcement, medical staff, and other involved parties.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records, reports, and death certificates.
- Arrange transport of decedents for autopsy when necessary.
- Conduct cremation examinations.
- Provide requested information to families and other impacted individuals.
- Prepare detailed periodic reports complying with state and county regulations.
- Manage databases and file systems in accordance with governmental standards.
- Respond courteously and promptly to inquiries from officials, employees, and the public.
- Manage time and set priorities to meet deadlines and project goals.
- Coordinate regularly with colleagues to enhance interdepartmental effectiveness.
- Maintain strict confidentiality for all case information.
- Assist other departments and staff members as needed.
- Follow all county policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Additional Responsibilities
- Remain on-call to attend investigations as required.
- Maintain departmental vehicles and equipment.
- Sanitize and clean morgue facilities.
- Manage inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Knowledge
- Familiarity with death scene investigation methods, techniques, and objectives.
- Basic understanding of medical and law enforcement terminology and procedures.
- Knowledge of coroner policies and operations relevant to the role.
- Awareness of Idaho and county laws, codes, and regulations related to death investigations.
- Interviewing, counseling, and investigative skills applicable to case resolution.
- Proficiency with computers, office software, and standard office machinery.
- Competence in file and information management systems.
- Strong command of English language, including grammar and composition.
- Understanding of FEMA policies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations regarding workplace safety.

Salary: $19.75 per hour
Location: Twin Falls County, Idaho
Work Environment: Combination of office and field with irregular hours and on-call duties.
