About the Role
Our client, a reputed organization based in Queenstown, New Zealand, operates a cloud-first Microsoft data environment. They are seeking a Data Platform Engineer to take charge of their primary data platform, enhancing and modernizing the infrastructure pivotal for organizational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and continuously evolve the cloud data platform utilizing Azure, Microsoft Fabric, and similar services.
- Design, build, and sustain ETL/ELT pipelines along with data integrations spanning multiple business systems.
- Support database architecture, optimize performance, and handle tuning for Azure SQL and managed instances.
- Develop and maintain Power BI architecture and semantic models to facilitate efficient reporting workflows.
- Implement and maintain frameworks around data governance, quality standards, and access management.
- Oversee monitoring, alerting, and stable operation of production environments, claiming ownership of overall platform health.
- Continuously seek opportunities for automation, simplification, and advancement rather than mere maintenance.
Candidate Profile
- Proven practical experience with Azure data services, including Azure SQL, Managed Instances, Data Factory, Data Lake, and CosmosDB.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL development combined with thorough database administration knowledge.
- Expertise in data warehousing, lakehouse architectures, and data modeling focused on fact/dimension and semantic models.
- Skilled in structuring Power BI architecture with emphasis on performance optimization for reporting infrastructure.
- Competence in Python or related scripting languages, CI/CD methodologies, and infrastructure as code principles.
- Ability to effectively translate business requirements into technical implementations and communicate proficiently with diverse stakeholders.
Distinguishing Qualities
Ideal candidates approach this role architecturally, recognizing how data fuels business decisions, owning platform-wide health beyond isolated tasks, and embedding governance, security, and compliance as intrinsic values. Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and AI workload data considerations is advantageous.
Location & Working Conditions
The position is preferably located in Queenstown, though exceptional candidates may work remotely with occasional travel to Queenstown.
