Role Overview
Barstool Sports is seeking an experienced Back End Engineer to join our Engineering Department in New York, NY. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing various projects, collaborating closely with product and engineering teams to meet core business goals. You will contribute to building APIs that power the Barstool cross-platform experience for both end-users and editorial staff, leveraging modern, cutting-edge technologies.
Responsibilities and Expertise
- Own and develop features across diverse projects while maintaining existing systems.
- Design APIs that deliver a stable and enjoyable developer experience.
- Write high-quality, stable code to operate within high-traffic production environments.
- Stay current with cloud technologies, primarily AWS or GCP, and serverless architecture concepts.
- Employ Infrastructure as Code strategies, specifically using Serverless frameworks.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical decisions clearly.
Technical Skillset
- Proficiency in backend languages and frameworks such as NodeJS and TypeScript.
- Experience with databases including MongoDB, MySQL, and Snowflake.
- Familiarity with writing and maintaining both unit and integration tests.
- Bonus experience in content publishing/CMS, video/streaming technologies (FFmpeg, HLS, QOS), ecommerce platforms, ad technology, podcast/audio technology, and transcription or commercial machine learning tools is advantageous.
- Exposure to frontend technologies like Semantic HTML, React.js, Next.js/Vercel for SSR/Isomorphic SPAs, Storybook.js, Video.js, HLS.js, and task runners (Webpack, Gulp, Grunt, NPM).
Candidate Requirements
- A minimum of 2 years engineering experience using JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Capability to think strategically about product direction and long-term vision.
- Strong self-motivation and ability to manage projects independently.
- Excellent communication skills for articulating decisions to diverse stakeholders.
- Comfort in working within a dynamic environment and collaborating across teams.
