Position Overview

This permanent, full-time role is based in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and involves working as part of a professional team within a community group home, supporting children and youth. Utilizing the Teaching Family Model, the position involves facilitating daily activities and routines, maintaining a structured and safe environment, aiding skill development, crisis management, supervision to ensure safety, and assistance with schooling and household tasks.

Mandatory Compliance Requirements

  • Level C First Aid Certification from an Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Approved Agency
  • A dependable personal vehicle
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Clean 3-year driving record
  • Proof of $2 million liability auto insurance coverage
  • Recent Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (within last 6 months)
  • Recent Intervention Record Check (within last 6 months)

Core Responsibilities

  • Conducting hourly room inspections and documenting results
  • Investigating unusual nighttime activities and contacting on-call or supervisory staff for emergencies as needed
  • Handling crises therapeutically
  • Supporting children's and youth's mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being to cultivate belonging
  • Performing routine household duties, including cooking and cleaning
  • Providing transportation for youth to and from school, appointments, and social visits

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or degree in a related area preferred, with a minimum of six months experience working with vulnerable children or families; relevant combinations of education and experience considered
  • Preferred experience in Community Group Care or in-care programs
  • Proven ability to deliver trauma-informed, family-sensitive, and culturally responsive care
  • Availability to work flexible 12-hour shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Capability to manage crisis situations therapeutically and to physically intervene when necessary, minimizing harm
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to relate well across age groups
  • Detail-oriented and organized, capable of juggling multiple tasks efficiently
  • Commitment to learning and practicing the Teaching Family Model and Closer to Home’s philosophy
  • Compassionate, positive, empathetic, and relational in approach
  • Possession of a reliable vehicle for work-related use
  • Eligibility to work full-time in Canada without sponsorship

Compensation: The position pays $23.15 CAD per hour.
