Job Overview
This role involves locating water lines, installing and maintaining water system equipment, including water meters and hydrants. The technician will engage in manual labor in varying weather conditions and work under the supervision of the Lead Field Technician and Water Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to NC811 locate requests by identifying water lines, valves, hydrants, and services to prevent damage.
- Enter locate tickets into the web-based locate system and complete assigned work orders.
- Activate and terminate water services; lock and unlock water meters as needed.
- Investigate and troubleshoot water leaks along with issues related to water flow, pressure, and quality.
- Address meter reading discrepancies and maintain water meter boxes.
- Repair or replace backflows, angle stops, water meters, and meter boxes; program meters accordingly.
- Maintain hydrants, ensuring the area is clear for visibility by emergency services and maintenance crews.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service by effectively communicating about fieldwork activities.
- Unload, organize, and stock necessary supplies and equipment on-site.
- Operate county vehicles for transportation to various job locations within Craven County.
- Participate in a weekly rotation for on-call duties responding to emergencies during after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, with some experience in maintenance or related fields; alternative training and experience combinations considered.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Familiarity with codes and regulations concerning underground utilities and installations.
- Practical knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and methods used for water system construction and upkeep.
- Understanding and application of OSHA safety standards relevant to water system operations.
- Competence using common office equipment including computers, tablets, and telephones.
- Skillful use of hand and power tools.
- Ability to accurately read water meters and log readings to relevant documentation.
- Capability to read and interpret blueprints and maps.
- Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Physical stamina for sustained manual labor in extreme temperature and adverse weather conditions.
- Capacity to establish and maintain productive working relationships as directed by work orders and locate ticket requirements.
Additional Information
- Potential requirement to assist Meter Readers or Water Plant Operators.
- May be required to serve during disaster situations.
- Physical demands include operation of various machinery and equipment, moving heavy materials up to 50 pounds occasionally, and working primarily in medium to heavy physical exertion conditions.
- Work environment includes a mix of standard office settings and outdoor field work under various weather conditions that demand adherence to safety precautions.
