Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Patient Services Department within the Wellington laboratory network as either a Trainee or a qualified Phlebotomist in a permanent, full-time capacity. This role involves working across multiple collection locations throughout Wellington, following a permanent roster that includes weekday and weekend shifts.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect blood samples from patients in both community and hospital contexts.
• Manage and handle biological specimens including blood, faeces, urine, and tissue while ensuring strict compliance with safety and procedural standards.
• Ensure accurate labelling and safe transport of patient samples to the laboratory.
• Assist with specimen processing and testing using advanced laboratory technologies.
• Maintain patient confidentiality, care standards, and adhere to quality guidelines consistently.

Candidate Profile

• Ability to function methodically and adhere strictly to quality control procedures.
• Strong customer service orientation with excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and laboratory safety and equipment is preferred but not mandatory.
• Possession of a Diploma in Applied Science or a Bachelor of Science is beneficial, though not required.
• Registration with the Medical Science Council and current Annual Practising Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician in Patient Services is advantageous but not essential.
• Valid New Zealand full or restricted driver’s license is required.
• Must have eligibility to work in New Zealand.

If not registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, the successful candidate will receive support to achieve registration and qualification as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician within two years of starting. Applicants currently pursuing this qualification or registration will also be considered.
