Role overview
UDP is hiring a qualified Traffic Management Operative to support road safety and traffic control activities across Colchester, Lowestoft, Southwald, Ipswich, and Halesworth. This is a full-time onsite role with a guaranteed 48 hours per week, plus the chance to work overtime.
Work schedule and flexibility
Regular day shifts are the norm, but the position requires a flexible approach. You should be prepared for evening and night shifts, weekend working, working away from home during busy periods, and participation in an on-call rota. Weekend availability is essential, and this is especially relevant if you have access to a company van.
Virtual hiring event
A virtual hiring event is scheduled for 21st and 22nd July from 9:30am to 2pm. It is intended as an opportunity to speak with the team remotely, learn more about the role and benefits, and move forward in your traffic management career without travelling.

What you will do
- Carry out traffic management duties to help keep roadworks safe and controlled.
- Support the installation and upkeep of temporary closures, diversions, pedestrian routes, cones, signage, lights, and barriers.
- Work flexibly across day, evening, night, weekend, and away-from-home assignments when needed.
- Join the on-call rota as required.
- Use your experience to help guide and support new trainees as they learn the job.
Qualifications and requirements
- Relevant traffic management qualifications are required, with M1 and M2 Lantra or higher being especially welcome.
- M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, and SLG Unit 2 qualifications may also be considered.
- You should be familiar with Chapter 8 regulations.
- A full driving licence is required, with no more than 6 points.
- Any driving disqualification must have ended at least 5 years ago.
- You must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screening before an offer is confirmed.
- A medical assessment may also be required.
- A positive, practical, and can-do attitude is essential.
- Strong adaptability, flexibility, and careful attention to detail are important.
- Training is subject to signing a training agreement.
