About the Role
Silver Fern Farms Ltd is looking for a practical and driven Technical Officer to support the site team in a busy production setting in Timaru, Canterbury. This position suits someone with solid technical capability, a strong focus on quality and compliance, and an interest in helping maintain high standards across food safety and operational performance. The role works closely with production, quality, and management teams to make sure products consistently align with customer, legal, and company expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Check and confirm that food safety, quality, and compliance controls are operating effectively.
- Carry out regular site inspections, audits, and product evaluations.
- Support the upkeep of HACCP, Risk Management Programmes (RMP), and wider quality systems.
- Look into quality concerns, customer feedback, and any non-conformance issues.
- Assist with microbiological and chemical sampling activities.
- Keep technical and compliance documentation accurate and up to date.
- Work with regulators, auditors, and customers when required.
- Provide technical guidance and training to operational staff.
- Contribute to improvement initiatives and process optimisation work.
- Help ensure environmental and animal welfare compliance obligations are met.
About You
The ideal candidate will bring experience or capability in technical, quality, or compliance work within food manufacturing, meat processing, or another primary industry environment. You should be confident working in a structured production environment and be comfortable balancing hands-on tasks with documentation and stakeholder communication.
Skills and Experience
- Experience in food manufacturing, meat processing, or a primary industry setting is preferred.
- An audit qualification, ideally an internal auditor course aligned to unit standards 8084 and 8086.
- Working knowledge of HACCP principles and food safety systems.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy.
- Confidence using Microsoft Word, Excel, and other business software.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Working Hours
The standard schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm. During the Bobby Calf season, from July to October, the role follows a rotating roster between 8:00am–5:00pm and 11:00am–7:30pm.
