Overview
This opportunity is for a Technical Author role with a partner employer based in New Zealand. The hiring process, including review of applications and all next steps, is handled by the partner company rather than the sourcing platform.
This role sits at the intersection of writing, engineering, and product thinking. It is suited to someone who can help raise technical documentation to the level of a core engineering practice in a fast-growing global technology setting. Depending on the team, the work may support product engineering, customer-facing technical functions, or internal operations, with documentation playing a key role in product adoption and operational quality.
The position is more than drafting manuals or guides. It calls for technical understanding, systems awareness, and close collaboration across functions. You will contribute to documentation standards, improve clarity across software ecosystems, and create content that remains consistent, practical, and scalable. There is also an expectation to engage with open-source communities and help evolve modern documentation methods. The environment places value on curiosity, accuracy, and continuous learning.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, update, and improve documentation for software products, internal tools, or business processes, depending on the team you join.
- Work alongside engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to make sure the documentation matches how systems work and what users need.
- Turn complex technical ideas into content that is clear, well structured, and easy for different audiences to follow.
- Help define and refine documentation standards, style conventions, and best practices across teams and products.
- Interact with users and communities to understand real usage patterns and make the documentation more relevant and easier to use.
- Encourage engineers and cross-functional colleagues to contribute to documentation efforts.
- Support the adoption of structured documentation approaches such as Diátaxis.
- Contribute to positioning documentation as an important discipline in both product development and organizational communication.
Required background
- Proven experience in technical writing, software documentation, or an engineering-adjacent role focused on clear communication.
- Exposure to software development or a strong working understanding of engineering environments, tools, and workflows.
- Ability to interpret complex technical systems and explain them using analytical, organized thinking.
- Strong writing skills with a sharp eye for clarity, precision, and consistency.
- Experience working with engineering teams, product teams, or open-source communities.
- Comfort using tools and workflows such as Linux, Git, command-line interfaces, or documentation systems like Sphinx and reStructuredText.
- Genuine interest in technology and a willingness to learn unfamiliar systems and domains.
- Ability to work both independently and with distributed teams in a fast-moving environment.
- Additional advantage: experience contributing to open source, UX writing, or leading technical communities.
Benefits and workplace support
- Fully remote setup with the chance to collaborate across global teams.
- Competitive pay with annual performance-linked increases and bonuses.
- Yearly learning and development allowance to support professional growth.
- Regular in-person team gatherings and collaborative sessions held internationally.
- Flexible annual leave and broad parental leave provisions.
- Employee assistance services and wellbeing support programs.
- Opportunity to influence open-source documentation practices at scale.
- Travel support and benefits connected to company-wide events and meetups.
Application and hiring process
This role is being managed through a partner-led recruitment process. Applications are reviewed using an AI-assisted matching system designed to assess candidates fairly and quickly against the role’s core requirements. The strongest-matching profiles are forwarded to the hiring company, while final interviews, assessments, and hiring decisions are handled internally by that employer.
Privacy and data use
By applying, you acknowledge that your personal information will be processed to evaluate your candidacy and shared with the hiring employer as needed. This is done on the basis of legitimate interest and pre-contractual steps under applicable data protection laws, including GDPR. You may request access, correction, deletion, or objection at any time.
Automated tools may be used to assist parts of the recruitment workflow, including resume review, response analysis, and basic inconsistency checks. These tools support the recruitment team but do not replace human judgment, and all final hiring decisions are made by people.
