About the Role

As an Early Career Software Engineer at Notion, you will play a crucial role in shaping core features and enhancing user experiences that add significant value. You'll engage in meaningful challenges with growing independence, authoring software that impacts millions globally. Ownership of important projects, making key technical choices, and contributing your unique viewpoints toward our product direction will be expected. You’ll collaborate closely with experts in design, product management, and data to help define the future of workplace collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy product features from initial concept through launch, followed by iterative enhancements driven by user feedback and data.
• Enhance performance, stability, and usability of essential features utilized by vast user bases and numerous organizations.
• Conduct experiments to boost user activation, retention, collaboration, and revenue in partnership with design, research, and data science teams.
• Create internal tools and platform improvements to enable rapid and safe software releases across engineering.
• Contribute to establishing team best practices, improving code quality, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and informed decision-making.

Potential Areas of Focus

• Core Product Features: Work on aspects such as the editor, databases, sharing systems, and other functionalities that underpin millions of workflows.
• AI and Automation: Develop and incorporate intelligent capabilities that enhance the contextual power and efficiency of Notion.
• Growth and Activation: Design features focused on improving user onboarding, engagement, and discovery of Notion’s benefits.
• Platform and Infrastructure: Support backend systems that demand high reliability, scalability, and performance to accommodate growth.

Required Qualifications

• Less than two years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems with a pragmatic approach centered on user needs.
• Analytical problem-solving skills including the ability to understand complex contexts, decompose intricate challenges, and balance technical solutions with business impact.
• Technology viewed as a means to create meaningful user impact rather than adherence to specific tools or trends; openness to leveraging modern AI-assisted development tools pragmatically.
• Proactive ownership and communication skills: self-driven project management, clear updates on progress and challenges, and initiative in problem resolution.

Preferred Skills

• Familiarity with parts of Notion’s technology stack such as React, TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and Elasticsearch.
• Awareness of the societal implications of technology and a commitment to responsible development.
• Appreciation of historical computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, and Alan Kay.

Compensation and Equal Opportunity Statement

Notion offers competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. For positions based in San Francisco or New York City, estimated salary ranges between $130,000 and $150,000 annually, varying according to location, role complexity, and candidate experience.
