Regulatory Counsel, APAC

We seek a seasoned Regulatory Counsel based in Australia to join our legal team, reporting to the Director, Global Regulatory Legal. This role focuses on leading Discord's regulatory strategy and response in the APAC region, including Australia and New Zealand, while also assisting other regions when possible. As a key member of the legal team, you will collaborate across the company to advocate effectively for Discord.

This is an international position based in Australia via employment through an international PEO.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive Discord's regulatory response efforts by evaluating inquiries' impact, gathering necessary data, and drafting compelling, compliant replies that advance our interests.
• Engage directly with regulatory bodies to present Discord’s compliance approaches and cultivate ongoing positive relationships to foster trust and collaboration.
• Prepare risk assessments, online safety documentation, and other reports required by regional regulatory authorities.
• Collaborate with Public Policy and Policy Legal teams to monitor changes in regulations, anticipate enforcement risks, and develop legal analyses guiding company strategy.
• Support public policy and communications efforts related to engagement strategies and safety messaging, including contributing to external narratives.
• Work alongside other regulatory counsels to update company standard templates on topics such as privacy, security, and teen safety.

Qualifications & Experience

• At least 7 years of professional experience in regulatory legal issues related to Internet regulation, encompassing areas such as online safety, user and minor protection, privacy, data protection, and consumer rights.
• Must hold a valid license to practice law in Australia.
• Previous experience within companies in communication, messaging, content, or gaming sectors.
• Comprehensive understanding of Australia's regulatory framework covering platform regulations, privacy laws, data protection, and consumer protection.
• Familiarity with regulatory environments across the broader APAC region or proven capability to rapidly adapt to regional regulatory demands.
• Proven experience in preparing regulatory responses, risk assessments, and reports complying with governmental agencies.
• Experience liaising with regulators in Australia and, ideally, in countries such as Korea, Japan, and other APAC locations.
• Exceptional writing and communication skills, with a capacity to customize messaging for diverse audiences.
• Open to engaging across projects of varying sizes and complexity.
• High emotional intelligence characterized by openness, humility, courage, collaboration, flexibility, growth mindset, and kindness.

Preferred Additional Skills

• Familiarity with Discord's platform and culture.
• In-house legal experience at consumer-focused technology companies.
• Experience handling relevant litigation matters.
