Role focus

The organisation is recruiting for two closely related paths within the engineering team. One path is centered on backend and product engineering using Python and FastAPI to build responsive, reliable applications for scientists such as biologists, chemists, and researchers. The second path is focused on platform and machine learning software engineering, building and scaling backend services that support model training, deployment, and production optimisation for data science and ML teams.

Technology environment

The ideal background includes experience with some, but not necessarily all, of the following tools and systems:

• Python, including FastAPI and newer tooling such as UV or Pixi
• API design and integration using REST and GraphQL
• Basic frontend work with HTML and HTMX
• AWS services such as S3 and ECS
• PostgreSQL databases
• Infrastructure provisioning and automation with Terraform
• Workflow orchestration tools such as Prefect
• Machine learning systems and GPU-based workloads
• Practical exposure to AI development tools such as Claude Code

Experience and background

The role is intended for senior-level software engineers with 6 to 10 years of experience. A degree at bachelor’s level or above is expected in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computational Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related discipline.
