Role Overview

This vital position within the UK Government Affairs team involves providing expert policy, regulatory, political, and strategic counsel to clients operating within complex regulatory landscapes. You will both lead and support policy engagement, stakeholder management, and advocacy efforts that directly influence client outcomes, contributing actively to business growth and enhancing the unit's reputation. Your role blends commercial understanding with political and policy expertise to empower clients in shaping and reacting to governmental policy and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Directly lead the provision of high-standard policy and regulatory guidance, assisting clients with navigating intricate political and legislative systems.
• Collaborate closely with Partners to craft client engagement plans, encompassing stakeholder identification, messaging framework, and outcome determination.
• Support clients throughout all phases of government affairs projects, from initial problem analysis and strategic planning to execution and subsequent follow-up.
• Produce influential written content such as briefings, correspondence, and engagement documents tailored for senior regulatory and political figures.
• Manage stakeholder engagement initiatives, ensuring their timely progress and sustained momentum.
• Oversee daily operations of client mandates, ensuring organized delivery, compliance with deadlines, and alignment with client goals.
• Serve as a primary contact for clients, building trusted relationships and offering commercially oriented advice with increasing independence.
• Contribute to business development by aiding in pitch preparation, identifying new opportunities, and promoting the Government Affairs practice.
• Mentor and support junior colleagues, fostering skill development across the team.

Candidate Profile

• Possess an in-depth insight into UK political, policy, and regulatory frameworks with relevant experience acquired in government, parliamentary settings, regulatory bodies, or public affairs contexts.
• Established contacts within Whitehall are a beneficial addition.
• Exhibit advanced analytical abilities to evaluate political and regulatory changes and translate these into clear, commercially pertinent advice.
• Strong communication skills with confidence in engaging senior stakeholders, including policymakers, regulators, and clients.
• Experienced in directing or assisting stakeholder engagement strategies, from audience targeting to messaging and goal realization.
• Adept at fostering successful relationships both externally (e.g., Parliament, regulators, trade bodies) and internally across multidisciplinary legal teams.
• Capable of independently managing multiple priorities with accountability for quality and prompt delivery in fast-moving environments.
• Actively participate in business development, including spotting opportunities, supporting client pitches, and nurturing relationships.
• Show sound judgment, professionalism, and awareness of ethical and regulatory standards applicable in government affairs and advocacy.
