About the Organization
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a prominent national legal advocacy group dedicated to racial justice, established in 1963 upon President John F. Kennedy's request. The organization advances civil rights through litigation, public policy, and advocacy, focusing on areas such as Voting Rights, Election Protection, Digital Justice, Economic Justice, Criminal Justice, Economic Opportunities, and Fair Housing. It utilizes extensive pro bono legal resources, contributing over 1 million hours in recent years.
Role Overview
We are hiring two full-time Paralegals in Washington, DC, represented by a union and reporting to the Paralegal Supervisor. The role involves administrative support across litigation, education, advocacy, and policy initiatives, primarily assigned to specific project areas to work closely with teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and maintain case files, litigation calendars, and manage ECF and PACER accounts.
- Review, edit, and format legal filings and exhibits, including proofreading, cite-checking, and preparing tables of authorities and contents.
- Coordinate discovery requests and responses, arrange depositions, schedule meetings, and related logistical tasks.
- Assist in producing and filing briefs, exhibits, testimonies, and public education materials with attention to detail in formatting and legal accuracy.
- Support attorneys in administrative and logistical matters of litigation and projects to ensure smooth operation.
- Learn and apply relevant court, local rules, procedures, and deadlines to ensure compliance by litigation teams.
- Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality and legal ethical standards.
- Provide administrative support for hearings, trials, depositions, expert interviews, oral arguments, and public engagements.
- Prepare internal reports such as weekly updates, board books, grant tracking, lobbying hours, and project data.
- Manage and update project-related web pages in coordination with attorneys and Communications staff.
- Assist with attorney bar and court membership processes.
- Maintain calendars for Project and case teams and coordinate travel and expense reports as needed.
- Undertake additional duties or special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies
- A minimum of two years' experience in a related role, preferably as a litigation paralegal.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is highly preferred.
- Paralegal certification from an accredited institution is desirable.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Strong research abilities utilizing diverse sources including internet and other media.
- Excellent communication skills for regular interaction with internal staff and external parties.
- Demonstrated proficiency in legal writing and editing, with ability to synthesize factual data.
- Capability to quickly learn case management software such as Asana, PACER, ECF, CLIO, or equivalent tools.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications and virtual communication platforms like Teams and Zoom.
- Willingness to obtain D.C. notary public licensure; associated costs will be covered.
- A strong commitment to racial justice, civil rights, and the organization's mission.
Additional Information
Salary Range: $65,934 to $82,306 annually.
