Position Overview
The Jailor role involves the supervision and management of inmates within the county jail to maintain safety and security for inmates, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the booking and processing of inmates at the county jail.
- Conduct regular security rounds, perform inspections of inmates and facility areas, and report maintenance or inmate-related issues to supervisors.
- Conduct perimeter checks around the safety and government complexes.
- Operate door locking mechanisms to regulate inmate and staff movement within the facility.
- Perform accurate inmate head counts and maintain detailed count records.
- Enforce jail rules and regulations, document violations, and apply disciplinary actions as necessary.
- Search inmates and cells to prevent contraband possession.
- Issue personal belongings, meals, uniforms, and other necessary items to inmates.
- Manage inmate mail distribution and collection.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations and provide aid as appropriate.
- Oversee inmate work assignments across the safety complex.
- Conduct fingerprinting services for the public.
- Escort inmates to various scheduled activities and facilitate coordination of visitations.
- Process inmate releases and handle transportation to and from the jail as needed.
- Prepare detailed incident and accident reports.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or an equivalent certification is required.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Possess or be able to obtain certifications in GCIC/NCIC, First Aid, CPR, and Basic Jailor Training.
- Valid state driver's license suitable for operating required vehicles or equipment.
- Physical capability to intermittently sit, stand, bend, crouch, stoop, and occasionally lift both light and heavy objects.
- Ability to distinguish shades of color and use the sense of smell when necessary.
Additional Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of jail administration and inmate security principles.
- Familiarity with county and agency policies, procedures, and applicable laws at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Proficiency with computers and related software used in jail operations.
- Strong organizational and work prioritization capabilities.
- Adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols when required.

The position involves working under guidelines outlined by county and sheriff's office jail policies. The job requires handling potentially challenging and violent inmate situations, contributing to the complexity of duties. All Camden County employees, including this role, may be designated as essential during emergencies and tasked with alternative responsibilities as needed.
Compensation
The annual salary for this position is $46,285.36.
