Role Overview
Smithsonian Institution is hiring an IT Specialist focused on endpoint software support in an enterprise setting. The role centers on building, configuring, rolling out, and administering software for managed devices, with Microsoft Intune and other cloud-based tools playing a major part in day-to-day work.
Key Duties
- Create, configure, and distribute software packages through Intune, using repeatable and automated deployment methods that match installation needs.
- Validate application packages for install reliability, performance, and compatibility across supported endpoints, while keeping deployment records, version history, and rollback steps current.
- Manage the complete software lifecycle, including rollout, upgrades, decommissioning, and replacement, and help plan patches and updates that reduce vulnerabilities and support security compliance.
- Evaluate the effect of software changes, work with stakeholders to schedule deployments with minimal interruption, and look for ways to simplify delivery through standardization, consolidation, or automation.
- Support security reviews, audit requests, and vulnerability reporting tied to endpoint applications and device configuration.
- Log and maintain customer cases in an automated ticketing platform; use Intune and associated tools to troubleshoot deployment, policy, and compliance problems, partnering with service desk, endpoint, security, and engineering teams as needed.
- Analyze deployment tickets to spot recurring patterns, suggest corrective actions, and keep technical references for packaging rules, deployment workflows, and endpoint software processes up to date.
Qualifications and Experience
The position requires at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Relevant experience includes configuring, deploying, and managing the software lifecycle through Microsoft Intune; remediating vulnerabilities in managed software; coordinating with customers and stakeholders; setting and applying IT security standards for software; handling complex customer support issues in a ticketing system; and producing documentation and process improvements.
Applicants must also demonstrate IT-related experience in the following competency areas: attention to detail, customer service, decision making, information management, interpersonal skills, oral communication, problem solving, teamwork, and technical competence.
Conditions of Employment
- Must pass a pre-employment background investigation.
- A probationary period may be required.
- Direct deposit or electronic transfer requires maintaining a bank account.
- Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
- Qualification requirements must be satisfied by the closing date of the announcement.
Application Notes
The resume submitted for this role must be no longer than two pages and should clearly show how your background matches the job duties and specialized experience requirements. Do not reuse wording from the vacancy notice; instead, describe your own experience in detail.
Both paid and unpaid experience may count, including volunteer service through National Service programs and other organizations. Part-time or unpaid work relevant to the position can be used to calculate total experience, and applicants should specify weekly hours worked.
For current Smithsonian employees, a transcript is not required at application time if the employee’s current official position is in the same 2210 series and the employee is in the same federal competitive status as this role. If selected, a transcript must be provided before the start date.
Additional Information
- This position is part of a bargaining unit.
- A recruitment incentive may be approved, but it is not guaranteed; if offered, it may require a service agreement to remain in federal service for a specified period.
