Job Overview

The Grounds Worker role is focused on maintaining a safe, attractive, and natural environment conducive to student learning within the school grounds.

Key Responsibilities

Perform upkeep and maintenance of school grounds including mowing, pruning, and planting.
Prepare soil beds for seeding or transplanting by cultivating and adding necessary fertilizers or chemicals.
Plant seeds, bulbs, shrubs, and tree seedlings to ensure appealing growth and appearance.
Test various lawn and flower seed varieties to identify those best suited for the soil conditions.
Trim hedges and prune trees to promote healthy growth and enhance visual appeal.
Operate manual and powered lawn mowers for lawn maintenance.
Set up and use sprinkling systems to water lawns and flowerbeds effectively.
Inspect flora for pests and diseases, applying appropriate treatments.
Perform adjustments and routine repairs on grounds maintenance equipment including lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.
Clear snow from sidewalks and driveways and apply anti-slip materials such as sand, salt, or ashes during winter months.
Collect and dispose of leaves and ground refuse responsibly.
Repair outdoor furniture such as chairs and benches as required.
Assist with assigned custodial duties indoors during winter seasons.
Carry out additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Physical Requirements

This position demands frequent physical activity including standing, walking, handling tools, as well as squatting, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. The worker must be able to continuously grasp and manipulate objects and occasionally lift or move loads up to 90 pounds. Work takes place both indoors and outdoors with potential exposure to chemicals like petroleum products and degreasers. Noise levels are usually moderate but occasional loud environments may occur.

Additional Information

This job is classified as Non-Exempt under FLSA standards. Salary and work year parameters will be set by the Board. Performance will be evaluated following the Board's policies for Support Services Personnel. The Grounds Worker reports directly to the Grounds Supervisor.

Demonstrated aptitude or competence for the assigned duties is required.
Flexibility to accept alternatives deemed acceptable by the Board or superintendent.
