Position Overview
The Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center integrates genetics and genomics in both adult and pediatric patient care, research, and education. We are seeking a full-time Genetic Counselor to join a team of skilled counselors, clinicians, researchers, and bioinformaticians.
Clinical Duties
- Deliver comprehensive genetic counseling services to pediatric and adult neurology patients and their families.
- Conduct intake assessments, evaluate genetic risks, coordinate genetic testing, and explain results.
- Act as a bridge between clinical teams and molecular diagnostic labs, prepare clinical summaries, and develop educational materials to enhance genomic testing knowledge among healthcare professionals.
Research Responsibilities
- Engage in research within the Precision Neurotherapeutics Program focused on personalized genetic therapies for neurogenetic disorders.
- Support patient enrollment in research and treatment initiatives and serve as primary contact for patients, physicians, and external partners.
- Assist with regulatory documents, IRB submissions, study database management, and ensure compliance with protocols.
- Coordinate and support individualized treatment programs and contribute to advancing research through collaboration, publication, and presentations.
Additional Responsibilities
- Contribute to variant interpretation and genomic analysis, clarifying genotype-phenotype relationships.
- Perform additional duties to support clinical care, research, and education as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum: Bachelor's degree or equivalent with three years relevant experience.
- Preferred: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling, board eligible or certified Genetic Counselor (ABGC).
- Familiarity with neurogenetics from graduate studies or clinical experience preferred.
- Experience in clinical research is an advantage.
- Conversational Spanish language skills are preferred but not mandatory.
Terms and Conditions
- Position Type: Officer of Administration, Regular Full-Time.
- Work Hours: 35 hours per week, standard schedule.
- Salary Range: $82,000 - $95,000 annually, dependent on qualifications, education, experience, specialty, training, and department budget.
