About Rare Beauty Brands
Rare Beauty Brands is rapidly expanding its portfolio of innovative beauty and skincare lines, including Kate Somerville and Patchology. Combining startup agility with the rigor of a performance-focused organization, we scale brands that build confidence, deliver measurable results, and consistently lead their markets. Our teams operate swiftly, embrace bold experimentation, and prioritize data-driven, creative, and collaborative approaches.
Role Overview
Kate Somerville seeks a fractional Shopify expert to take full technical ownership of the DTC ecommerce platform for a focused duration of six months. The essential criterion is profound Shopify expertise—someone deeply experienced with Liquid, metafields, metaobjects, and complex, layered custom themes, with no onboarding delay to master the backend systems.
Strategic insight is encouraged but secondary; technical mastery is the priority, with strategic judgment considered a valuable addition.
This six-month contract addresses short-term stabilization and enhancement of the current Shopify setup while the brand shapes a broader commerce strategy encompassing loyalty, personalization, subscriptions, and marketplaces. A suitable candidate may have the opportunity for contract extension or evolution aligned with this roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate directly within a sophisticated, custom Shopify theme environment using Liquid, JavaScript, CSS, and JSON templates to develop, troubleshoot, and enhance site features.
- Diagnose and swiftly fix product display problems, metafield conflicts, and schema inconsistencies including bundle and product detail page configurations.
- Create, test, and implement promotional mechanics such as gift-with-purchase, buy-one-get-one offers, discounts, and landing pages in preparation for major promotional events.
- Manage Shopify app installations, configurations, troubleshooting, and review app compatibility to prevent live site conflicts.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation and standard operating procedures to ensure the theme’s logic remains clear and transferable.
- Collaborate closely with the EVP of Brand & Digital to prioritize and sequence technical tasks, provide feedback on improvements, and communicate technical constraints clearly to decision makers.
- Support timely and reliable delivery aligned with promotional and product launch calendars.
- Act as a technical advisor during the development of connected commerce strategies involving loyalty programs, personalization, subscription services, and unified customer data.
- Highlight areas where the current Shopify setup may aid or impede future commerce initiatives and advise on addressing technical debt strategically.
- Provide informed opinions on platform and integration choices without driving overall strategic direction.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Extensive, verifiable expertise in Shopify Liquid theme development with comfort working inside complex, highly customized or multi-layered theme architectures.
- In-depth knowledge of Shopify APIs, metafields, app ecosystems, and advanced Shopify Plus features.
- Minimum of five years’ hands-on technical experience delivering ecommerce solutions, emphasizing execution over strategy or account management.
- Proven capacity to operate autonomously in dynamic DTC environments with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate complex technical issues and trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders, without excessive explanation.
- Experience working in fractional or contract roles, effectively managing priorities within scoped projects.
- A problem-solving orientation that favors overcoming obstacles proactively and prioritizes shipping solutions quickly and iteratively over prolonged planning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in beauty, skincare, or consumer product industries.
- Familiarity with subscription management platforms such as Ordergroove or involvement in subscription replatforming projects.
- Understanding of connected commerce concepts including loyalty programs, personalization, and customer data unification.
- Residency in or near the Los Angeles area is preferred.
Engagement Details
This contract role spans 3 to 6 months with flexible workload management based on promotional timelines and project demands. The scope is prioritized over fixed weekly hours. Candidates suited technically may discuss commitment cadence and potential contract extension. Preference is given to candidates located around Los Angeles.
