Position Overview
The Finance Director at GeoScienceWorld plays an essential role overseeing and ensuring the integrity of the organization's financial operations. Reporting directly to the COO, this full-time exempt position is remote-based and involves occasional travel up to 10%. The role demands strategic leadership combined with detailed hands-on financial management to maintain organizational transparency and sustainability while promoting growth aligned with the mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily accounting activities including accounts payable, receivable, payroll processing, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Ensure accuracy of financial records and maintain robust internal controls.
- Prepare comprehensive monthly and annual financial reports for senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Conduct detailed financial analysis supporting budget planning, forecasting, and strategic decision-making.
- Develop and monitor budgets collaboratively with department heads.
- Oversee royalty accounting, ensure compliance with agreements, and provide reporting and analysis to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting standards, government regulations, and regulatory and tax reporting requirements.
- Coordinate annual audits liaising with external accountants and auditors.
- Administer sales commission tracking and payroll payment requests.
- Manage collections for overdue invoices and report monthly Key Performance Indicators.
- Perform ad hoc financial analyses and other assigned duties.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on organizational planning and resource allocation.
- Support Board and committee meetings with financial and operational reports.
- Assist business development efforts with financial modeling, investment analysis, and strategic planning.
- Identify and implement improvements to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and effectiveness.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience in finance, operations, or nonprofit management roles.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Demonstrated experience managing budgets and audits.
- Proficient with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar systems.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong communication skills and interpersonal aptitude.
- Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
Preferred Credentials
- CPA, MBA, or nonprofit financial certification is advantageous.
- Experience in growing nonprofit organizations.
- Familiarity with scientific research publishing and nonprofit compliance standards.
- Knowledge and current use of AI technologies applied to accounting.
Additional Information
- Compensation includes a base salary between $100,000 and $135,000 plus up to 10% discretionary annual bonus opportunity.
- Benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage along with a 7.5% retirement contribution after one year.
