Organization Overview
Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is the sole federally funded civil legal aid organization serving the entire state of Alabama. Established in 2004 by merging three legal aid entities, LSA operates as a private, nonprofit law firm dedicated to assisting low-income families and individuals across all 67 counties. With an annual budget of $12 million and a staff of about 120 employees, including 65 attorneys, LSA delivers legal assistance through eight program offices and a statewide call center handling over 120,000 calls per year. Funding derives primarily from the Legal Services Corporation (75%), supplemented by local, state, federal sources, foundations, and individual donations.
Role Summary
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer and public face of LSA, charged with leading strategic initiatives, ensuring excellent programming, maintaining financial health, spearheading fundraising, ensuring compliance, and cultivating relationships with community and political stakeholders. The role also involves close collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide visionary leadership to promote access to justice statewide.
- Ensure the delivery of top-quality legal services through a variety of programs and service models.
- Act as LSA's principal representative at local, state, and national levels with courts, government entities, funders, and community organizations.
- Lead fundraising initiatives for operations, innovation, and capital needs, including personal engagement with major donors.
- Recruit and nurture senior staff, fostering a culture of inclusivity and high performance.
- Oversee comprehensive financial management including budgeting, audits, long-range planning, and risk mitigation.
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors on governance, strategic planning, and fiduciary responsibilities.
Service Area
LSA provides legal aid services statewide with offices in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Selma. The central call center operates from Montgomery.
