About the Role

Alpha Construction Ltd, a leading privately owned Civil Engineering and Building contractor in the UK, is seeking an Estimator to join its pre-contract team. Our diverse projects span the Energy, Industrial, and Commercial sectors with values ranging from £500,000 to £10 million. The ideal candidate will have experience with industrial buildings, small to medium scale civil engineering projects, drainage, and concrete structures. Knowledge of contract types such as NEC3 Options A and B, JCT, ICE Measurement CESMM, and builders quants is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and submit tenders and budgets, including obtaining quotations for subcontract work, materials, and plant.
• Supervise junior staff when necessary.
• Review enquiry documents for completeness and contract specifications.
• Discuss any onerous or special contract conditions with management before proceeding.
• Acknowledge tender receipt to clients when required.
• Attend tender review meetings and submit tenders in line with company procedures.
• Ensure all construction methods comply with Health and Safety policies and legislation.
• Include appropriate financial allowances for safe construction practices.
• Conduct site visits to assess the environment, access, public utilities, and local conditions affecting costs.
• Liaise with clients for a thorough understanding of project requirements.
• Collaborate with Contracts Department for construction methods and insights.
• Prepare detailed quantity take-offs to produce accurate cost estimates.
• Select and obtain quotes from suitable subcontractors for specialist trades.
• Approve material prices and plant hire rates for tenders.
• Calculate labor, plant, material costs and aggregate on summary sheets, including site overheads.
• Create resourced programs and reconcile with cost summaries.
• Assist with contract award procedures, including order verification and handover meetings.
• Ensure tender compilation aligns with the company’s Integrated Management System.
• Provide training and mentorship to junior staff to develop competencies.
• Maintain professional relations with clients, subcontractors, and the public.
• Promote additional work opportunities and handle all transactions professionally.
• Confidentially manage all client information and commercially sensitive documents.
• Communicate developments affecting tender submissions or client relationships to the Commercial Director.
• No tender or budget is to be submitted without review by the Commercial or Managing Director.

Qualifications and Experience

• Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Quantity Surveying.
• Experience estimating from first principles including labor, plant, materials, and subcontractor costs.
• Familiarity with subcontract procurement, selection, resolving queries, and analyzing compliant quotes.
• Knowledge and experience working with contract types such as NEC3 Options A and B, JCT, ICE Measurement CESMM, and building quantification techniques.
