Role Overview
The Director of Learning & Development, based in San Leandro, CA, leads and manages a comprehensive employee training strategy, focusing on enhancing technical and leadership skills across the organization. This role oversees both a broad learning program and a specialized Technician Training Program aiming for progressive skill advancement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership for Peterson University, enhancing technical and professional competencies among employees, dealers, and industry partners.
- Partner with leadership to design and implement a training strategy aligned with company goals and values.
- Manage operations and growth of a revenue-generating regional training center ensuring compliance with Caterpillar standards.
- Collaborate with Talent Acquisition to innovate recruitment channels for Technical Trainers.
- Work with the Trainer Development Manager to develop Technical Trainer readiness supporting growth initiatives.
- Oversee structured technician training pathways to promote technical proficiency and career growth.
- Lead the design and improvement of Peterson’s non-certified training center and related programs including leadership, communication, project management, and safety training.
- Conduct learning needs assessments to identify skill gaps and develop targeted curricula.
- Establish scalable learning frameworks, governance, and succession planning to support long-term development.
- Engage with advisory boards and apprenticeship councils to advance technician training interests.
- Evaluate program effectiveness through metrics and feedback, ensuring efficient budget use and ROI.
- Maintain partnerships with external educational providers to expand learning opportunities.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning and high employee engagement.
- Stay informed on relevant trends impacting learning and development objectives.
- Commit to personal professional growth through self-directed development and external programs.
- Conduct or assist with training classes as needed.
- Travel up to 30% to various locations to fulfill job duties.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Diesel Technology, Organizational Development, Adult Education, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
- Seven or more years managing technical training programs or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated success in designing and accrediting adult education programs.
- Supervisory experience is required; master’s degree in Adult Education preferred.
- Experience with unionized employees is a plus.
- Strong expertise in instructional design, adult learning theories, and performance consulting.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
Compensation and Other Information
The salary range for this position in San Leandro, CA is $200,000 to $250,000 annually, reflective of experience and education. This also includes a comprehensive benefits package.
