Role Overview
The Critical Facility Technician is tasked with ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all mission-critical infrastructure within the data center. This includes managing energy isolation, switch operations, and facility inspections in compliance with safety standards and established procedures. Reporting to the Critical Facility Shift Manager, the technician collaborates within a team focused on excellence, accountability, and teamwork. This position requires availability to work shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays as part of continuous 24/7 operations.
Main Responsibilities
- Conduct both scheduled and unscheduled rounds inspecting critical systems such as electrical, mechanical, HVAC, fire/life safety, and security for proper function and anomalies.
- Monitor systems like Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) for alarms and alerts, responding swiftly as per standard operating procedures.
- Maintain detailed logs of alarms, operational events, isolation activities, and shift duties.
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance when assigned.
- Execute all energy isolation protocols including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) per company and regulatory standards.
- Manage switchgear operations including breaker racking, transfer switches, and panel isolations, documenting all activities.
- Confirm isolation and de-energization before work, ensuring proper signage, barricading, and communication.
- Coordinate isolations with vendors and other departments both in planned and emergency scenarios.
- Respond promptly to alarms and system notifications, carrying out initial troubleshooting and escalating issues as necessary.
- Assist in emergency responses, system recovery efforts, and safe shutdowns.
- Adhere strictly to all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure activities follow approved Methods of Procedure (MOP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP).
- Keep documentation up to date regarding rounds, isolations, switch activities, and maintenance tasks.
- Identify opportunities for operational improvements and risk mitigation.
- Engage in training sessions and program reviews.
- Contribute to procedure and playbook developments.
- Collaborate effectively with teammates to maintain a culture of accountability and mutual respect.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, or related fields are preferred.
- At least two years of experience in mission-critical environments such as data centers, hospitals, or industrial plants.
- Proven experience with energy isolation, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and switchgear operations.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems including UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs, CRAC/CRAH units, and fire/life safety systems.
- Proficiency in using BMS/EPMS platforms and managing alarm systems.
- Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, Methods of Procedure (MOP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP).
- Familiarity with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and related safety standards.
- Excellent communication and documentation capabilities.
- Willingness to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
