Casual Café Assistant - Timaru

Role Overview

We are seeking experienced casual Café Assistants to join our casual workforce in Timaru. This role involves supporting a variety of cafés, restaurants, event venues, and hospitality businesses around the Timaru region with skilled, reliable hospitality professionals.

Key Responsibilities

• Preparing and serving high-quality espresso-based coffee and other beverages.
• Taking customer orders and operating point-of-sale (POS) and till systems efficiently.
• Delivering friendly, professional customer service even during busy periods.
• Preparing light meals and cabinet food items as required.
• Restocking displays and monitoring inventory levels.
• Clearing and cleaning tables promptly to maintain a welcoming environment.
• Ensuring the café area is clean, organised, and complies with food safety and hygiene protocols.
• Supporting the café team with general front and back of house tasks as necessary.

Candidate Requirements

• Proven prior experience working in a café setting.
• Strong barista skills with confidence in preparing espresso-based coffee.
• Competency in using POS/till systems and processing cash transactions accurately.
• Exceptional communication and customer service abilities.
• A positive, proactive attitude with a dedicated work ethic.
• Ability to perform effectively in a busy, fast-paced environment.
• Flexible availability including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
• Reliable transport arrangements.
• Valid New Zealand work eligibility (citizen, resident, or appropriate work visa).
