Overview
This opportunity is perfect for graduates interested in starting a career in medical physics. The role is for an Assistant Physicist as a Healthcare Science Practitioner, ideal for those seeking experience prior to enrolling in Clinical Scientist training programs in Medical Physics or those aiming to build a foundation in this field.
Key Duties
- Provide technical and scientific assistance across the Radiation Physics Department's operations.
- Support the measurement of radiation output from therapeutic equipment including high-energy linear accelerators and radioactive sources.
- Contribute to quality assurance procedures for treatment machinery.
- Assist in computerised treatment planning for cancer radiation therapy patients.
- Aid in the delivery of the I-131 radioiodine therapy service.
- Participate in departmental projects such as Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT), AI-based auto contouring and planning, and radiobiology studies.
Department and Facilities
The Radiation Physics & Radiobiology Department maintains close partnerships with Imperial College and operates advanced equipment including 4 Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators, 2 Accuray Radixact systems, CT scanners, an Xstrahl unit, and an Elekta Flexitron HDR brachytherapy machine. Radiotherapy planning is conducted using software platforms Raystation, Eclipse, Elements (for SRS), and Oncentra Brachy. The department also leads stereotactic cranial radiotherapy and SABR treatments across multiple sites.
