About The Role
We invite motivated students to join our Research & Development and engineering teams, contributing hands-on to innovative product features at the cutting edge of AI-native software. This internship involves creating systems that empower autonomous AI agents to query and reliably reason with data, and take informed actions. This represents a fundamentally novel engineering challenge distinct from traditional human-facing software.
You will collaborate closely with seasoned engineers on pioneering technical problems where definitive solutions have yet to be established. Expect genuine technical ambiguity, experimentation opportunities, and the chance to have your contributions deployed within a live commercial platform.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to R&D initiatives across multiple interconnected domains, including designing agent-facing APIs and data models that communicate real-time, structured, and queryable data tailored for AI agents.
- Define and implement schemas and query semantics to enable reliable agent reasoning.
- Develop, test, and refine production-ready AI agents focusing on reliability, tool utilization, and safeguards, advancing systematic reasoning about potential failure modes in commercial environments.
- Create AI-driven operational workflows with agents and analytics to autonomously monitor, diagnose, and escalate issues, progressing from mere error detection to clarifying significance and prescribing next steps.
- Build and maintain data pipelines and telemetry instrumentation that provide integrated, agent-queryable datasets across product usage and operations, facilitating large-scale reasoning and analysis to extract actionable insights.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or graduated from a New Zealand tertiary educational institution (excluding those who completed studies overseas).
- Enrolled at NZQA levels 6-10 or have completed studies within the past 12 months.
- Pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, design, or business fields.
- Legally authorized to work in New Zealand.
- Have not been previously employed full-time by the company; part-time or temporary engagements are permitted.
- Have not participated in more than two Experience Grant internships with the company.
- Able to work onsite at the Wellington CBD headquarters.
Benefits and Learning Opportunities
- Develop backend/API engineering expertise by designing, creating, and testing scalable production APIs and data models.
- Gain skills in AI agent and system engineering by building and debugging reliable AI agents and analyzing their failure cases.
- Acquire data pipeline construction and data analytics experience to transform structured data into actionable business insights.
- Enhance presentation and communication abilities through regular live demos to broader teams and contributing to company-wide content dissemination.
- Improve time management and teamwork skills by managing tasks within iteration cycles and actively taking part in stand-ups, planning sessions, and reviews.
Additional Information
This internship offers authentic exposure to commercial R&D environments, mentorship from experienced engineers, opportunities to release work into live products, and a robust foundation for a career focused on AI-native software engineering.
