Software Engineer, Govtech

This opportunity is aimed at an early-career engineer who is excited to build features that support expansion into new markets, help Lyft meet local regulatory obligations, and apply modern AI technologies to improve the rider and driver experience. A strong sense of ownership matters here: you should be comfortable driving work through to completion, coordinating with adjacent teams, and making sure your code ships and creates real user impact.

What you will do

You will contribute to partner integrations, weigh technical investments against product priorities, and work with other engineers on system design. The role also involves building a deep understanding of customers and collaborating closely with Product, Design, Science, and Operations to help guide product direction.

Responsibilities

• Help define the roadmap and system architecture using technical insight and customer understanding.
• Produce clean, well-tested, readable, and maintainable code.
• Contribute to leading larger projects from concept through successful delivery.
• Remove blockers and communicate effectively with internal and external partners to move work forward.
• Take part in code reviews to improve quality and spread knowledge across the team.
• Share expertise through brown bags, technical talks, and promotion of sound engineering practices.

Experience and requirements

The role calls for industry engineering experience and a BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.

• Background in object-oriented programming.
• Experience with distributed systems.
• Experience working with databases, including relational and/or NoSQL systems.
• Experience with front-end development.
• Ability to write clear and scalable design documentation.
• Experience designing, building, and improving team-owned components.
• Nice-to-have: exposure to public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Microsoft Azure.
• Nice-to-have: experience with machine learning and building LLM applications.
• Nice-to-have: familiarity with AI tools.

Work arrangement

This is an in-office hybrid position. Team members are expected in the office at least 3 days per week, including Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Lyft states that working in the office at least 3 days per week is an essential part of this hybrid role. Hybrid employees may work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year.

Compensation

The expected base salary for the Toronto area is CAD 88,000 to CAD 110,000 per year, excluding possible equity, bonus, or benefits. Final compensation depends on factors such as qualifications, experience, and work location.
