Job description
Role Overview
As an Operational Support Grade at HMP Bullingdon, you will be integral to the smooth functioning of a busy correctional facility. Your duties will range from conducting security procedures such as searches at entry points, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, to monitoring phone calls and CCTV systems. The position combines administrative work with physical activity including lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles across the prison premises.
Key Responsibilities
- Performing security checks and searches at the entrance.
- Handling incoming and outgoing deliveries efficiently.
- Supervising visitors to the establishment ensuring compliance with protocols.
- Monitoring communications through phone systems and surveillance equipment.
- Escorting vehicles within prison grounds and assisting with physical tasks as required.
Candidate Profile
Ideal applicants will possess strong communication skills and maintain composure under pressure. Judgement, common sense, and teamwork are essential to succeed in this fast-moving role. While direct interaction with inmates is limited, occasional contact may occur depending on the prison's operations.
Work Conditions
You will be expected to work various shifts, which include nights and weekends, to ensure operational continuity. Due to the rural location of some prisons like HMP Bullingdon, having a full UK driving licence, including D1 vehicle category for driving minibuses (vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats), is advantageous, although not strictly mandatory. The shift timings are fixed and punctuality is crucial.
Career Development and Benefits
This role offers valuable insight into prison operations and serves as a stepping stone to other careers within the correctional service, including a pathway to become a Prison Officer via a conversion scheme.
In addition to the base salary of £30,491, benefits include:
- Starting with 25 days of annual leave, increasing to 30 days after completing 10 years' service (pro-rated).
- 9 additional bank, public, and privilege holidays annually.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Participation in the Civil Service pension scheme.
- Other perks such as season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional Information
No formal qualifications are required, making this opportunity accessible to those ready to commit to public service and safety. The role demands a reliable approach, responsible judgment, and a strong team ethic.
