Job description
Job Summary
We are looking to fill three fixed-term, part-time Medical Laboratory Assistant positions within the Pathology Specimen Reception teams at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (2 roles) and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford (1 role). These roles are not trainee positions for Biomedical Scientists and are unlikely to lead to such career progression.
Key Responsibilities
The role includes supporting scientific staff by receiving and entering data for patient samples, performing pre-analytical preparation of specimens, preparing chemical solutions, managing consumable stock levels, safely disposing of chemical and biological waste, and decontaminating complex laboratory equipment. This position is essential to supporting diagnostic services.
Working Hours and Conditions
Applicants will work 20 hours each week across Monday to Friday, with shifts scheduled between 7:00 AM and 9:00 PM. Shift assignments will vary based on service needs requiring a flexible approach. Additionally, the role requires participation in a 7-day rota that includes evening, night, weekend, and bank holiday shifts.
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will demonstrate self-motivation, conscientiousness, organizational skills, attention to detail, the ability to remain calm under pressure, strong communication, and observational skills, and should enjoy team collaboration. Previous NHS laboratory or analytical experience is advantageous but not mandatory, as comprehensive training will be provided.
Educational Requirements
Applicants must have completed secondary education with GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science at grades 9-4 or equivalent. It is important that applicants clearly state their GCSE results on their application to comply with the person specification; incomplete information may lead to disqualification.
Additional Information
There is no sponsorship available for this role. Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the department by arrangement. Due to potentially high application volumes, the employer reserves the right to close applications early.
