Job description

Overview

The Marine Officer Grade 2 plays a vital role in supporting safe and environmentally responsible use of Queensland's waterways by offering expert guidance on legislation related to both commercial and recreational vessels.

This position involves hands-on delivery and coordination of diverse services including maintenance of navigational aids, pollution response education, safety compliance programs, and the facilitation of access to waterways for all users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and routinely update operational procedures to ensure consistent, effective service delivery.
  • Oversee upkeep of operational assets such as vessels, plant equipment, and pollution control tools, ensuring readiness and functionality.
  • Contribute to the development and enforcement of Safety Management Systems governing maintenance and operation of departmental vessels.
  • Lead or participate in programs tied to maritime services and emergency response initiatives.
  • Support audit processes by reviewing buoy moorings, navigational aids, and safety equipment compliance.
  • Conduct intelligence gathering, investigations, project management, and activities aligned with government priorities such as the War on Wrecks.
  • Monitor maritime safety, perform investigative tasks, and lead aspects of incident inquiries.
  • Engage with the community via educational outreach promoting boating safety and environmental awareness through presentations and event participation.
  • Assist in designing and implementing marine safety education programs and behavioral change campaigns.
  • Issue notices to mariners regarding local navigational hazards, using appropriate resources.
  • Provide operational and administrative support to manage navigational hazards.
  • Manage all elements of the regional aids to navigation program including procurement, deployment, maintenance, and removal to uphold infrastructure performance.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external organizations to achieve joint objectives.
  • Actively engage in performance reviews and professional development; support colleagues as needed.

Additional Information

The appointment shall remain valid for 12 months.
