Overview
Wikimedia Community Ireland is recruiting an Irish Language Officer to sustain and enhance the Irish language across various Wikimedia initiatives, with a strong emphasis on An Vicipéid, the Irish Wikipedia. This position is remote-based, requiring occasional in-person participation nationally and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research, compose, and edit Irish language content ensuring linguistic accuracy, neutrality, and proper citations.
- Deliver structured training workshops both online and in person for diverse groups including schools, youth organizations, universities, and community groups.
- Support and engage with the Vicipéid editor community by assisting newcomers and participating in Wikimedia Community Ireland's edit-a-thons and events.
- Contribute to cultural collaborations supporting galleries, libraries, archives, and museums under coordination with the Community Manager and volunteer team.
- Create Irish language content for blogs, social media, and communications adhering to Wikimedia Community Ireland's editorial standards, with English support as needed.
- Implement current strategic plans (2025–2030) focused on outreach and development of the Irish language within Wikimedia projects and develop new strategies to promote and integrate Irish language efforts.
Required Skills
- Fluent spoken and written Irish with familiarity in standard written forms; additional language support may be provided.
- Strong proficiency in information technology, comfortable using web-based tools and quickly adopting new platforms; experience with Google Workspace is essential.
- Excellent communication abilities tailored for a range of audiences from students to institutional partners.
- Highly organized, dependable, and capable of independent work in a remote environment.
- Passionate about open knowledge access and the promotion of the Irish language in digital spaces.
Desirable Experience
- Experience editing the Vicipéid or other Wikimedia projects (advantageous but not mandatory).
- Knowledge of language rights and minority language community issues.
- Strong connections within the Irish language sector, including work with key organizations and Gaeltacht communities.
- Understanding of international minoritized language situations.
- Technical skills such as coding, Wiki markup, Wikidata, Python, or similar are a plus.
- Experience in teaching, training delivery, or presentations.
- Familiarity with the GLAM sector or nonprofit/open source environments.
- Relevant third-level qualification in Irish or related field.

Terms and Conditions
Annual salary of €35,000, grant-funded and paid fortnightly, renewable subject to funding. The role includes a six-month probationary period and reports directly to the Volunteer Chair of Wikimedia Community Ireland. The officer will work alongside the Community Manager, Administrative Assistant, and Volunteer Team.
