About The Role

Join The Washington Post's mission to revolutionize news delivery across America by leading the International reporting division. This key leadership role involves managing a global team of correspondents and editors across Europe, Asia, and Latin America, curating authoritative coverage on political, economic, and cultural developments impacting the world and intersecting with U.S. national security.

The International Editor will expand and maintain a network of freelance journalists worldwide to contribute to major stories pertinent to the readership. The position demands a visionary leader adept at strategic editorial decision-making, data-driven audience insights, and leveraging diverse journalistic formats to engage a broad audience.

Team and Responsibilities

• Lead and set strategic editorial priorities for international coverage encompassing breaking news and in-depth enterprise stories.
• Manage and develop a team comprising more than a dozen full-time journalists and freelancers, overseeing story selection, framing, and editing to ensure clarity, rigor, and relevance.
• Coordinate with multiple internal departments to plan multifaceted coverage and utilize innovative storytelling such as visual, audio, and data-driven content.
• Handle operational, staffing, and security aspects linked to international reporting.
• Advocate for and represent international journalism within the wider newsroom leadership.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, high journalistic standards, and ambition within the team.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive experience leading international news reporting or editing, with strong knowledge of U.S. defense and diplomatic affairs.
• Exceptional editorial judgment and a proven record of impactful journalism leadership.
• Deep global affairs expertise including geopolitics and international news trends.
• Proven leadership and team development skills through complex newsroom environments and evolving industry challenges.
• Proficiency in managing both fast-breaking news and long-term editorial strategies.
• Innovative vision for engaging broader audiences through evolving international journalism.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• A strong commitment to journalistic integrity, including accuracy and fairness.

Compensation and Work Environment

The salary range for this role is $161,100 to $299,300 annually, dependent on qualifications and skills. The position may be eligible for bonuses and incentive programs. Work is primarily onsite at the Washington, D.C. newsroom, with consideration for other locations for exceptional candidates.

The Post offices feature open layouts equipped with modern technology and accessible transportation. Except for necessary travel, employees are expected to work onsite five days per week.
