Executive Data Scientist

About the Role

The National University of Singapore's (NUS) Office of Finance is seeking a motivated Executive Data Scientist to join their Projects, Applications & Data Intelligence (PADI) team. This unit serves as a key strategic partner driving financial sustainability and operational excellence through advanced analytics and innovative technology. As part of the Finance Team, you will contribute to shaping financial strategies, leveraging AI, and harnessing data science solutions to fuel research and education at a premier global university.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and maintain analytics and AI solutions tailored for finance business needs, including LLM applications, Python scripts, ML prototypes, automation workflows, and BI dashboards.
• Develop Python-based tools for data processing, automation, API integrations, reporting, and AI experimentation.
• Support machine learning and large language model (LLM) initiatives, including data extraction, preparation, prompt engineering, model evaluation, testing, and deployment assistance.
• Analyze diverse datasets to deliver actionable insights, generate reports, and build dashboards to aid informed decision-making.
• Collaborate effectively with stakeholders and cross-function teams to gather requirements, resolve issues, and encourage solution adoption.
• Adhere to coding standards, maintain clear documentation, and use version control systems such as Git.
• Continuously explore emerging developments in AI, LLMs, data science, and automation tools to identify practical applications.
• Contribute to analytics project management including scoping, progress tracking, testing, and stakeholder communications.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

• Holder of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Business Analytics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or related quantitative disciplines.
• Solid Python programming skills capable of writing clean, maintainable code for data processing, automation, API integration, and rapid prototyping.
• Fundamental knowledge of SQL and database concepts such as querying, joining, filtering, and working with structured data.
• Enthusiasm for Large Language Models and generative AI, supported by coursework, personal projects, internships, hackathons, or autodidactic efforts.
• Basic grasp of data science and machine learning techniques including data preprocessing, model assessment, embeddings, classification, regression, and clustering.
• Quick adaptability to new tools, methods, and technology trends especially in rapidly evolving AI domains.
• Analytical problem-solving approach with curiosity to innovate and convert concepts into functional prototypes.
• Good proficiency in verbal and written communication, ability to document work comprehensively and explain complex technical information clearly.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Practical experience with LLM tasks such as prompt design, chatbots, agent building, retrieval-augmented generation, or API usage.
• Familiarity with Python data processing libraries and machine learning frameworks including PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Knowledge of BI tools like Power BI and automation platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, PySpark, n8n, or workflow automation technologies.
• Basic understanding of MLOps/LLMOps principles including versioning, deployment, monitoring, and ethical AI usage.
• Participation in research projects, internships, open-source contributions, or personal AI initiatives is advantageous.
