District Sign Technician I - IV

Job Overview

This role involves executing skilled transportation-related tasks to install, repair, and maintain traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators within a district. Employees act as lead workers by training others and coordinating inventory and records management related to signs and materials. The position demands using specialized tools and equipment for sign installation, and performing duties independently while escalating unusual issues to supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Support transportation maintenance crews and respond to emergencies as necessary.
• Transport equipment, tools, materials, and products safely.
• Maintain records for expenses and inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Calculate material quantities required for projects.
• Prepare concrete for sign foundations and handle related materials.
• Operate boom trucks, bucket trucks, and specialized vehicles to install roadway signs.
• Manage preventive maintenance and repair for sign trucks.
• Install and repair signs, supports, foundations, and delineators adhering to traffic control standards.
• Order supplies and signs from district and regional sources (applicable to higher technician levels).
• Perform nighttime inspections to verify reflectivity and condition of traffic signs and markers.
• Assist in scheduling and leading crews, including training and overseeing work quality.
• Coordinate inventory control and oversee team administrative tasks like approving leave and reporting workflow updates.

Qualifications

• Experience: Ranges from none (Tech I) to three years in sign installation, roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or related fields (Tech IV).
• Education and Training: Relevant technical education may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Licenses: Valid driver's license and a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with "N" endorsement required.
• Knowledge of Texas traffic control manuals, sign standards, inventory procedures, and safety protocols.

Physical & Working Conditions

• Work is mostly outdoors in variable weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and noisy environments.
• Tasks involve medium physical work requiring lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, stooping, and prolonged standing.
• Workers must wear safety gear such as respirators and hard hats.
• Requires good visual and auditory capabilities for safety and precision.

Employment Terms

• Pre-employment physical and drug testing mandatory.
• Subject to random drug tests during employment.
• Must be available to respond to emergency calls within 45 minutes, 24/7.
