Critical Environment Field Service Engineer

About the Role

Join Microsoft as a Critical Environment Field Service Engineer (FSE) within the Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining and supporting the infrastructure behind Microsoft's cloud services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. Our global data center portfolio includes over 100 facilities and 1 million servers, servicing billions worldwide. We emphasize sustainability and continuous evolution to uphold Microsoft’s status as a leading cloud provider.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure adherence to data center business policies and service-level agreements.
• Collaborate with relevant teams and resources to complete projects and tasks effectively.
• Oversee programs within your responsibility area, maintaining budget prudence and cost-effectiveness.
• Follow strict safety and security protocols, reporting any issues promptly.
• Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes as needed.
• Maximize Critical Environment availability alongside landlord partners in leased data centers.
• Manage daily operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment, including procedures review and risk mitigation.
• Drive reduction in major and human-error incidents year over year.
• Support initiatives focused on cost and energy efficiency.
• Lead emergency preparedness and response efforts, serving as escalation point for facility issues.
• Coordinate and supervise audits and compliance checks related to Critical Environments.
• Regularly report and analyze power, temperature, humidity, and SLA metrics.
• Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with engineering teams and landlord partners.
• Share knowledge and best practices across data center peers globally.
• Mentor colleagues and contribute to a positive and learning-focused team environment.
• Drive risk reduction in maintenance tasks through scheduling accommodations and suggestions for continuous improvement.
• Own end-to-end service quality ensuring excellent customer experience regarding availability, safety, security, and service delivery.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent plus at least 2 years of experience in a data center or critical facility environment, or 3+ years of relevant industry experience with some college coursework.
• Ability to pass Microsoft's Cloud background check at hire and every two years thereafter.
• Must verify Australian citizenship with valid passport to meet federal security requirements.
• May require enhanced security vetting through Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (NV1/2, PV clearance assessment).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience exceeding 3 years specifically with Critical Environment infrastructure components such as UPS, Generators, and Air Handling Units.
• A Bachelor’s degree or technical certification in mechanical or electrical engineering or related services.
• Background in large-scale Critical Environment projects.
• Familiarity with IT infrastructure operations including servers, SANs, and network equipment.
