Role Overview and Responsibilities
This role focuses on developing and refining intricate sheet metal components, such as body in white (BIW) structures, closures, and hoods, utilizing advanced CATIA V5 sheet metal modeling techniques. The engineer will ensure designs meet precise engineering standards and manufacturing limitations, performing CAD modeling with strict adherence to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to guarantee dimensional accuracy and assembly fit. Responsibilities include tolerance stack-up analysis to minimize quality and assembly issues, forming feasibility studies using simulation tools to address material flow and defect prevention, and collaboration with stamping and tooling teams to optimize die design and tool integration.
The position also involves leading sheet metal joining designs encompassing welds, adhesives, and mechanical fasteners aligned to structural and noise, vibration, harshness (NVH) requirements. Management of product lifecycle processes through Teamcenter PLM, handling design revisions, change notices, and maintaining configuration integrity, is essential. The engineer will use digital mockup solutions such as Vismockup for assembly validations and clash analysis while working closely with cross-disciplinary teams to resolve challenges related to material formability, tooling wear, and distortion.
Required Skills and Expertise
- At least five years’ experience in sheet metal design for automotive body, closures, and hoods.
- Expert proficiency in CATIA V5 and automotive GD&T standards.
- Strong understanding of stamping, forming processes, and material behavior involving high-strength steels (HSS), advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), and aluminum alloys.
- Experience with tolerance analysis, assembly fitting, and manufacturing collaboration techniques.
- Facility with Teamcenter PLM and Vismockup digital mockup software.
- Knowledge of welding and joining methods to ensure structural integrity.
- Advanced understanding of sheet metal metallurgy, stamping physics, forming simulation (FEA), and tooling design principles.
- Capabilities in root cause analysis and corrective action within sheet metal manufacturing contexts.
- Awareness of NVH impacts on sheet metal design and vehicle body architecture including crashworthiness criteria.
