Job Overview

The Wildlife Monitor position involves supporting crews in BC's backcountry regions by providing both lethal and non-lethal wildlife protection measures. The role requires physically navigating challenging outdoor conditions and includes in-house training, with backcountry experience considered beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive risk assessments and conduct tailgate safety meetings before entering backcountry areas.
• Generate detailed inspection reports documenting observations and crew conditions.
• Maintain physical fitness to operate in remote and varied weather environments.
• Work collaboratively with project managers, crew leaders, and stakeholders to design and execute wildlife monitoring strategies.
• Hold certifications such as CORE Training, Possession Acquisition License, Driver's license, and bear awareness training.
• Provide guidance and educate crew members on wildlife protocols and risk mitigation techniques.
• Identify and communicate wildlife-related risks to crew teams promptly.
• Operate vehicles and equipment including trucks, trailers, shotguns, and UTVs during shifts.
• Exhibit professionalism consistently throughout all duties.

Qualifications

• Valid Driver's License and Possession Acquisition License are mandatory.
• Experience in backcountry environments with wildlife interactions.
• Three to five years of wildlife monitoring experience is advantageous.
• In-depth understanding of bear and predator behavior and safety awareness.
• Demonstrated firearm handling and operation skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication capabilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in remote field conditions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant reporting tools.
• Willingness to travel to various field sites as required.
