Job description

Role Overview

The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for making sure freight, products, and supplies are received, stored, handled, shipped, and distributed correctly. The role also oversees the daily work of dock personnel and others performing similar duties.

What You’ll Do

  • Run day-to-day warehouse activity, including receiving, storage, order picking, packing, and outbound dispatch.
  • Serve as a contact for customer service matters and work closely with operations and customer service teams to keep fulfillment accurate and on schedule.
  • Lead warehouse staff by training them on SOP updates and new procedures, tracking productivity, and handling performance or disciplinary matters when needed.
  • Look for ways to improve processes and introduce better practices and technology where useful.
  • Use warehouse management systems to control inventory and improve workflow.
  • Review available metrics to measure workload and team productivity.
  • Keep inventory records accurate so internal and external demand can be met.
  • Resolve operational problems and inventory mismatches while communicating clearly with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare shift handoff reports for the incoming team when required.
  • Help plan warehouse layout and space needs to reduce damage or loss and maximize storage efficiency.
  • Consider freight turnover, size, weight, and other factors when assigning warehouse space.
  • Make sure warehouse activities follow OSHA safety rules, industry standards, and company procedures.
  • Conduct safety checks, inspections, and training, and apply procedures for hazardous materials and equipment safety.
  • Prepare reports as needed.
  • Oversee warehouse equipment and system maintenance and repairs when applicable.
  • Operate a forklift when needed.
  • Cross-dock experience is strongly preferred.
  • Carry out other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant credentials such as APICS or CILT are an advantage.
  • At least 5 years of direct or related warehouse experience is required, preferably in freight forwarding or logistics.
  • At least 1 year of experience mentoring or leading others is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of warehouse management systems is needed.
  • Solid understanding of safety regulations and warehouse best practices is required.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and familiarity with dock equipment is required.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills are required, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, and stand continuously and communicate effectively in writing, verbally, through a PC/keyboard, or by phone.
  • Must be able to handle moderate stress levels.
  • Work environment noise may range from moderate to high.
  • Must be able to lift and move 40 to 80 lbs in a warehouse setting.
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, squat, and stoop as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise staff and hold them accountable for performance.
  • Support the team in setting and meeting goals and performance targets.
  • Coach and mentor team members.
  • Identify training needs and deliver training as required.
  • Hold regular one-on-one and team meetings.
  • Clearly communicate departmental and individual goals and initiatives.
  • Track, review, and discuss metrics and goals with team members on a regular basis.
  • Complete performance reviews, recommend rewards, and carry out disciplinary action or other workplace solutions when necessary.
  • Own the recruiting and hiring process for new staffing needs.
  • Maintain a team environment that supports the company’s broader mission and goals.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, onsite position based in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Salary range: $55,930 to $66,800 annually.

Experience with cross-docking is highly preferred.
