Job description

About Fig

Fig is a Canadian fintech focused on making personal borrowing quicker, easier, and more accessible. Its fully digital lending experience lets customers apply in minutes and get decisions fast, without needing to deal with paperwork, branch appointments, or lengthy delays.

Founded in 2023, the company has grown rapidly and has already been recognized with awards such as Consumer Lender of the Year and FinTech Startup of the Year. Fig is also regularly listed among Canada’s Best Workplaces and holds a 4.8/5 Trustpilot score from customers.

Backed by Fairstone Bank of Canada and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Fig combines established lending expertise with the speed and flexibility of a startup environment.

About the Role

Fig is looking for a Head of Engineering to take a major leadership role as the company moves from a single-product lender to a broader multi-product financial platform. Reporting to the COO, you will join the leadership team and help define the long-term technology direction, engineering standards, and platform design.

As the business expands into new offerings, you will help create the systems, technical foundations, and team capabilities needed to support the next stage of growth. This position is well suited to a practical leader who can balance architecture decisions, execution, team development, and executive-level business thinking.

In the short term, you will work with internal stakeholders and outside development partners to bring the company’s next financial products to market. Over time, you will influence engineering strategy across a growing set of products and capabilities.

The company is seeking someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, interested in solving complex problems, and excited about using modern tools, automation, and AI to improve how engineering teams work. The role also requires the ability to operate effectively in a regulated environment where speed, quality, and risk management must be carefully balanced.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own engineering strategy, the technical roadmap, and platform architecture as Fig grows beyond a single-product model.
  • Work with internal teams and external development partners to move new financial products from early concept through launch.
  • Align technology decisions with business goals, operational needs, and the company’s long-term growth plans.
  • Build and guide a strong engineering organization with a culture centered on accountability, execution, teamwork, and ongoing improvement.
  • Make important technical calls related to infrastructure, security, scalability, reliability, and engineering standards.
  • Manage both internal engineering efforts and outside delivery partners to maintain accountability and high-quality execution.
  • Improve engineering processes, tools, automation, and AI-supported workflows to raise team productivity and leverage.
  • Collaborate across Product, Operations, Risk, Compliance, and Customer Experience to create secure, scalable, and customer-focused systems.
  • Represent the technical perspective in executive and board discussions involving technology direction, risk, scalability, and growth.

What You Bring

  • Sound judgment for working in both fast-moving startup settings and regulated financial businesses, with the ability to balance urgency, collaboration, quality, and risk.
  • Background building, launching, and scaling products in fintech, lending, banking, payments, or other regulated sectors.
  • Strong technical decision-making ability across complex systems and evolving platforms.
  • Experience balancing fast delivery with scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Comfort leading teams through uncertainty and shifting priorities.
  • Proven ability to build healthy, high-performing engineering cultures.
  • Experience coordinating external vendors, agencies, or distributed engineering groups.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A hands-on, practical style and willingness to get directly involved when needed.
  • Interest in AI tools and emerging technology, with good instincts for applying them to improve productivity and operations.
  • Strong systems thinking and a preference for simple, scalable, resilient solutions.

Why Join Fig

  • Opportunity to join early and help shape the future of a fast-growing fintech business.
  • A high-ownership role with direct exposure to senior leadership and company-building work.
  • A culture that values impact, accountability, curiosity, and collaboration.
  • Hybrid work setup with a mix of remote work and in-office time, currently one day per week in Toronto.
  • Competitive pay with an expected base salary range of $185,000 to $205,000, plus an annual performance-linked incentive bonus.
  • Employer-matched retirement savings program.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, along with health and wellness spending accounts.
  • Generous vacation and wellness time.
  • Parental leave top-up support.
  • Continuing education stipend for professional growth.
