Position Overview

The Vice President of Human Resources at Virginia Green is a senior strategic leader responsible for guiding all facets of human capital management, including Talent Acquisition, Learning & Development, Total Rewards, HR Operations, and Employee Relations. This role leads an experienced HR team of about 15 members, building scalable systems, enhancing leadership capabilities, and driving organizational effectiveness to guarantee an exceptional employee experience from hiring to retirement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO, COO, and executive team on workforce strategy, organizational design, succession planning, leadership effectiveness, and overall organizational health.
  • Develop and implement a multi-year HR strategy in alignment with company growth goals.
  • Present talent strategies, organizational metrics, and HR initiatives to executive leadership and the Board.
  • Lead workforce planning to accommodate expansion, seasonal staffing needs, and sustained growth.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Direct people strategy for mergers and acquisitions, including HR due diligence, workforce planning, onboarding, cultural integration, change management, and retention.
  • Create scalable integration processes ensuring consistent associate experiences across all new locations.
  • Collaborate with operations leadership to integrate people, systems, and culture effectively while preserving productivity and employee engagement.
  • Support market growth and opening new branches through preparatory workforce planning and organizational readiness.
  • Transform Talent Acquisition into a high-performing team capable of meeting rigorous hiring targets across regions.
  • Enhance Virginia Green's Employer Value Proposition to attract top talent within the green industry.
  • Develop leadership pipelines via succession planning, mentoring, leadership development, and career progression.
  • Continue fostering a culture of high performance centered on coaching, accountability, ongoing feedback, and professional growth.
  • Equip managers with necessary skills and resources to lead teams through change and growth effectively.
  • Uphold and enhance company culture by aligning leadership actions, communication, recognition, and associate engagement across all sites.
  • Lead enterprise-wide change management initiatives linked to growth, acquisitions, technology deployments, and other transformations.
  • Formulate strategies to boost employee engagement, retention, onboarding, and overall work experience.
  • Partner with Operations to streamline HR processes and remove barriers, creating a seamless associate experience.
  • Advance HR operations with continuous improvements ensuring efficiency, scalability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Leverage HR technologies like UKG to automate tasks, generate insightful analytics, and enhance reporting.
  • Establish executive dashboards to monitor key HR metrics such as turnover, retention, hiring success, engagement, leadership growth, labor costs, and productivity.
  • Maintain oversight of HR compliance, records, policies, and operational excellence.
  • Provide leadership for the company's self-insured health plan balancing associate needs and fiscal responsibility.
  • Design competitive compensation and benefits plans attractive to diverse roles within field and corporate sectors.
  • Manage HR budget, benefits spending, vendor partnerships, and strategic HR investments.
  • Use data and market insights to shape compensation and total rewards approaches.
  • Lead a proactive, fair, and consistent employee relations program ensuring trust and responsiveness.
  • Guarantee compliance with employment laws at federal, state, and local levels across multiple states.
  • Work closely with Operations and Safety leadership to reinforce safety as a core organizational value.
  • Oversee policy development, investigations, risk management, and employment practices that safeguard the organization and staff.
  • Mentor and manage a high-achieving HR team cultivating collaboration, innovation, accountability, and growth.
  • Define clear performance expectations and measurable KPIs for all HR functions.
  • Build HR organizational capacity to support the company’s expanding and evolving needs.
  • Ensure HR functions as a trusted, strategic business partner throughout Virginia Green.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related discipline required; advanced certifications (MBA, SHRM-SCP, SPHR) strongly preferred.
  • 12 to 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources, including executive roles.
  • Proven experience managing HR in multi-site, service-driven or labor-intensive environments.
  • History of successfully scaling HR during rapid growth and organizational transformation.
  • Experience with HR aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and integrations is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of managing self-insured health plans, executive compensation, and comprehensive rewards programs.
  • Expertise with HRIS platforms, preferably UKG, workforce analytics, and HR technology solutions.
  • Ability to travel regularly (around 25-40%) to support operations across multiple states.
