Role overview

The Vice President of Finance is part of the senior management group and acts as the organization’s lead financial strategist. The role is focused on protecting long-term financial stability while helping move forward the organization’s strategic goals. It reports to the Senior Vice President of Administration & Human Capital and works closely with leadership to ensure responsible financial management across all entities. Collaboration also extends to the corporate leadership team, the Finance & Sustainability Committee, and the Board of Directors.

The compensation range for this position is $110,000 to $120,000.

Financial leadership and strategy

  • Direct the annual budgeting cycle, long-range planning, and forecasting efforts.
  • Track organizational financial results and recommend actions that strengthen financial position and operating efficiency.
  • Prepare financial statements, forecasts, and analysis for executive leadership, the finance and sustainability committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Contribute to cross-department initiatives that improve organizational performance and efficiency.
  • Act as a go-to financial advisor for internal teams and elevate strategic matters when needed.
  • Help build a finance culture centered on innovation, accountability, teamwork, and ongoing improvement.

Accounting and financial operations

  • Oversee core accounting functions such as general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, treasury activities, fixed assets, and month-end and year-end close.
  • Make sure monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements are prepared accurately and on time in line with GAAP.
  • Maintain effective internal controls and accounting policies that protect organizational assets.
  • Manage cash flow and keep watch on liquidity.
  • Handle banking relationships and provide guidance on investment strategy.
  • Oversee financial operations across a multi-entity structure, including the parent organization and affiliated subsidiaries and LLCs, with proper intercompany accounting, cost allocation, and entity-level reporting.
  • Support the financial side of capital projects, including construction budget monitoring, grant draw requests, funder compliance, and administration of ESD capital grants.

Grant and compliance management

  • Work with the Director of Grants Management to oversee financial activity tied to grants and contracts, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with all requirements.
  • Create and maintain methods for grant allocation, indirect cost allocation, and cost recovery, and lead indirect cost rate discussions with federal cognizant agencies and auditors.
  • Prepare the financial reports and analysis needed for grant compliance, subrecipient oversight, and related reporting obligations handled by the Director of Grants Management.
  • Partner with grants leadership and program teams on grant budgets, financial planning, and spend-down approaches.
  • Maintain records, systems, and controls that support compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Financial reporting and analysis

  • Build reporting tools, dashboards, and analytics that support decision-making across the organization.
  • Review financial trends and explain risks and opportunities to leadership.
  • Compare performance to budget and recommend corrective action when variances or risks arise.
  • Support business planning through forecasting and scenario modeling.

Audit, tax, and risk management

  • Lead the annual independent audit and coordinate all related activities.
  • Manage audit preparation for multiple entities and ensure accurate consolidation as well as entity-level reporting across affiliated organizations.
  • Oversee the preparation of Form 990 and other required tax filings.
  • Keep internal controls and risk management practices effective.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, donor restrictions, and nonprofit reporting rules.
  • Identify financial risks to the enterprise and present mitigation suggestions to leadership.
  • Assess the financial impact of organizational risks, regulatory updates, and economic conditions.

Leadership and team development

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the finance team while maintaining a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Set department priorities and performance standards aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Drive process improvements and operational efficiency through technology and best practices.
  • Work on payroll accounting, benefits budgeting, compensation planning, and 401(k) matters.

Supervisory responsibility

This position supervises the Finance team and includes responsibility for hiring, coaching, performance management, employee development, and departmental planning.

Schedule, travel, and work setting

This is a full-time hybrid role. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility based on organizational and business needs. Minimal local travel may be needed for meetings, conferences, banking, or professional development.

The role is mostly sedentary and involves extended time at a computer reviewing financial data, preparing reports, and analyzing detailed information. It also requires clear communication, use of standard office equipment, and occasional lifting of files or office materials up to 20 pounds. The work environment is a professional office setting with regular use of computers, telephones, and other standard office tools, alongside hybrid collaboration across departments while handling confidential financial and personnel information.

Education and experience requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • CPA certification is strongly preferred.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible finance leadership experience are required, including a minimum of 5 years leading finance teams and serving as a strategic partner to executive leadership.
  • Proven success in nonprofit financial strategy, grant compliance, organizational budgeting, and board-level financial reporting is required.
  • Experience advising executive leadership and boards on strategic financial issues is required.
  • Hands-on experience with federal Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), indirect cost rate negotiation, and subrecipient monitoring in a nonprofit or quasi-governmental setting is required.
  • Experience managing finances across multiple legal entities, including subsidiaries or affiliated LLCs, is preferred.

Special requirements

The ideal candidate must be able to use sound judgment, protect confidentiality, manage competing priorities, and explain complex financial information to audiences with different levels of financial knowledge. This person should be a strategic thinker who can balance big-picture direction with strong operational execution.

  • Deep understanding of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Strong command of grant accounting, restricted funding, indirect cost allocation methods, and compliance rules.
  • Expert-level capability in budgeting, forecasting, cash management, financial planning, and analysis.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development ability.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to explain complicated financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Familiarity with NetSuite or a similar multi-entity ERP system is an advantage.
  • Experience with enterprise accounting platforms, ERP systems, payroll systems, and financial reporting tools.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to build productive relationships across departments and with outside stakeholders.
  • Skill in turning complex issues into concise leadership recommendations.
