About the CTO, Software Organization

The CTO, Software team is a global organization of thousands of engineers and leaders responsible for the strategy, architecture, engineering, operations, and vision behind HP’s software and platform technology stack. Its work spans modern, AI-driven platforms covering developer experience, data and AI, security, infrastructure, reliability, device software, and customer-facing applications. The group’s mission is to create high-impact, AI-enabled experiences for tens of millions of customers around the world while also helping shape HP’s next phase of growth through software and AI innovation.

Role Overview

The Vice President, CTO Operations acts as the operational partner to the CTO, Software and is responsible for aligning strategy, programs, and communications to maximize the organization’s impact across HP. This leadership role owns strategy and transformation, executive operations, technical program management, and communications. It is a key position in supporting HP’s software-led transformation by creating new operating models, improving efficiency, and helping the organization execute at scale.

The role reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer, Software and partners closely with senior stakeholders across product and technology. It offers the chance to influence company-wide outcomes at a global Fortune 100 business with more than 28,000 patents, over $55 billion in annual revenue, and 58,000 employees worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Set the tone for a culture centered on accountability, operational rigor, and a customer-focused approach.
  • Hire, develop, and lead a strong team of operations and execution leaders with varied expertise and backgrounds.
  • Create and roll out the operating model and stakeholder engagement framework for the new CTO Operations function, acting as the main point of contact for stakeholders and translating business goals into technology and engineering outcomes.
  • Use proven operating approaches to strengthen delivery, improve engineering excellence, and provide insights into execution progress and constraints that support strategic decisions.
  • Own strategy and transformation planning, including change management, OKR execution, business metrics, analytics, reporting, and new engagement approaches that remove organizational blockers.
  • Lead a central Chiefs of Staff team that provides proactive executive support to engineering leaders across CTO, Software and helps increase execution speed and engineering productivity.
  • Manage central technical program management to ensure strong delivery for cross-functional engineering initiatives across the CTO, Software organization.
  • Oversee internal and external communications for CTO, Software, including all-hands meetings, employee engagement, onboarding, key organizational messaging, and external speaking engagements.

Qualifications

  • Current or previous VP-level experience in strategy, operations, or a closely related field within an established technology company.
  • At least 15 years of experience in strategy, operations, or related areas, including more than 8 years in senior leadership positions.
  • Demonstrated success in building and guiding high-performing teams that deliver strategy, operations, and execution capability in large, complex product or engineering settings.
  • Background in driving strategy or operations within engineering organizations serving millions of customers or large commercial businesses with more than $100 million in annual revenue.
  • Strong history of improving operating efficiency and engineering effectiveness through structured thinking and disciplined delivery.
  • Experience leading or expanding functions such as transformation, chief of staff, technical program management, and communications.
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and build alignment in large matrixed environments with competing priorities and many stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical and operational topics to executive audiences.
  • Strong collaboration skills and leadership presence, with a reputation for earning trust, attracting top talent, and developing diverse, high-performing teams.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this role is $280,000 to $350,000. In addition, bonus and/or equity may be available for United States candidates. Compensation is adjusted based on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Location

This position may be based in Palo Alto, CA, Vancouver, WA, or Spring, TX.
