Job description

About the Role

Schell Games is hiring a UX/UI Game Artist to support interactive projects across online worlds, handheld titles, and themed attractions. The studio is one of the largest full-service game developers in the United States, known for creating education and entertainment experiences across multiple platforms, with current emphasis on virtual reality, augmented reality, location-based experiences, and social games.

This role suits someone who enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-moving environment and is passionate about building interfaces that are intuitive, polished, and enjoyable to use. The position requires someone who can balance creative and technical demands, contribute to team workflows, and deliver work reliably against milestones.

What You’ll Do

  • Partner with the Art Director and Design Director to keep UX/UI scope and timelines realistic.
  • Clarify where UX responsibilities sit between the UI/UX artist and the design team.
  • Take part in UX workshops with designers and cross-functional team members to shape the experience direction.
  • Review playtesting and user-testing feedback with the design team and use it to improve the user experience.
  • Help create and maintain documentation that defines the game’s UX approach and UI visual style, working alongside design and art leadership.
  • Coordinate with production to plan UX and UI work across teams and departments.
  • Create and implement UI assets in coordination with engineering, including the support needed for proper integration and optimization.

Candidate Expectations

The studio expects this team member to be building depth in their craft, showing dependability, and growing through feedback and mentorship. You should be able to work with openness, build trust with colleagues, seek guidance when needed, and learn from senior teammates and industry experts.

Required Qualifications

  • You must be based in the Pittsburgh area and able to work onsite Tuesday through Thursday, plus three additional work-from-home days each month.
  • A portfolio is required and should include UX process work, wireframes, and finished UI assets.
  • You should have strong verbal and visual communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator is required.
  • You need to be adaptable to different art directions and visual styles.
  • Experience with at least one game engine, such as Unreal or Unity, and the ability to implement designs in that environment is required.

Preferred Background

  • Foundational concept art skills are a plus.
  • Experience with Figma is preferred.

Education

  • A BS, BA, or BFA in graphic design, fine arts, visual communication, HCI, or a related field is preferred.

DEI and Workplace Culture

The studio states a commitment to an equitable, inclusive, and respectful work environment. Employment decisions are made without discrimination based on protected characteristics such as sex, gender, gender identity, race, color, religion, age, disability, ethnicity, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, veteran status, family or parental status, or other legally protected traits.

The company emphasizes that diversity is important to its success and that every team member is expected to help maintain an inclusive culture where different perspectives and backgrounds are welcomed and valued.
