About the company

Epia Neuro is building neural technology that aims to help people with neurological conditions regain function and independence. Its platform combines implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to turn neural intent into practical action. The company is initially focused on stroke-related motor impairment and plans to extend into cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, with a long-term emphasis on the needs of an aging population.

Role summary

This is a 1099 independent contractor role centered on producing high-quality UX deliverables for product development and regulated medical device documentation. The designer will lead discovery and interaction design for clinician-facing and patient-facing software used with a brain-computer interface (BCI) system. Working with the medical science team, the contractor will convert clinical workflows, patient needs, and real-world usage contexts into user needs, task flows, and wireframes that support product requirements and software engineering. The applications are intended to support both everyday movement assistance and rehabilitation for motor recovery.

Scope of work

  • Work with the medical science team, and with clinicians and patients when available, to capture clinical workflows, patient journeys, intended use environments, and user needs for both clinician and patient software.
  • Define the intended users, environments, and key tasks needed for downstream human factors work.
  • Identify potential use errors and hazardous usage scenarios, and contribute to use-related risk analysis.
  • Map workflows and information architecture for clinician tools such as configuration, session management, and progress tracking, as well as patient tools such as therapy feedback, device status, home guidance, and safety alerts.
  • Create low- to mid-fidelity wireframes and interaction patterns for important workflows that can inform product requirements without finalizing visual polish too early.
  • Document design choices and supporting research so the work feeds the product requirements, the design history file, and future handoff rather than being lost as informal team knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Background in regulated medical devices, digital health, or healthcare UX.
  • Experience designing software for clinicians and/or patients, with a solid grasp of clinical workflows and constraints.
  • Ability to turn input from medical and scientific stakeholders into clear user needs and design artifacts.
  • Strong UX foundations, including user research, task analysis, workflow mapping, information architecture, and wireframing in Figma or a similar tool.
  • Practical experience applying IEC 62366-1 and FDA human factors guidance to software used in regulated medical devices.
  • Experience preparing regulated design documentation that is suitable for audit review.

Preferred experience

  • Experience in neurotechnology, BCI, neuro-rehabilitation, or active/implantable devices.
  • Design experience for patient-facing Android apps or home-use medical devices.
  • Exposure to safety-critical alerting and notification design.
  • Experience visualizing data or signals, especially physiological or time-series information.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards such as WCAG for clinical and patient users.
  • Prior handoff experience with an in-house engineering team.
