Job description

About Dexterra Group

Dexterra Group is a publicly traded company that has grown into a major North American provider of integrated services. With a long history spanning more than 75 years through the organizations that now make up the group, the company focuses on creating and managing built environments that support communities and the economy. Its culture emphasizes reliability, inclusion, teamwork, recognition, and a healthy work-life balance.

Role Overview

The Utility Janitor role blends cleaning duties with basic facility support and driving responsibilities. The successful candidate will keep shared camp spaces, offices, and work areas clean and hygienic, while also operating camp vehicles to move waste, supplies, linens, and equipment between locations. Strict attention to safety, WHMIS compliance, and PPE requirements is essential.

This position is ideal for someone with a background in hospitality or janitorial work who is comfortable living and working in a remote camp environment. Travel is fly-in/fly-out from Edmonton, Alberta or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to sites in Nunavut or the Northwest Territories. Weather and logistics may affect travel timing.

Camp Living and Amenities

  • Meals and accommodation are fully provided on site.
  • Transportation to and from Edmonton is included.
  • Private room accommodation includes cable television.
  • Wi-Fi access is available.
  • Laundry facilities and detergents are provided.
  • Use of the gym and common areas is available.

Key Duties

  • Clean assigned camp areas such as dining halls, recreation rooms, offices, and warehouses.
  • Sanitize washrooms, locker rooms, and storage spaces, and replenish cleaning and paper supplies.
  • Carry out floor care and surface cleaning, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, buffing, carpet care, rug cleaning, and window washing.
  • Collect waste and recycling throughout the camp and transport it to disposal areas using camp vehicles.
  • Move supplies, linens, and equipment between buildings by operating utility vehicles.
  • Handle light maintenance work such as replacing bulbs, checking filters, and clearing drains, and escalate larger repair issues.
  • Follow PPE, WHMIS, and sanitation procedures at all times.
  • Support special tasks, including securing facilities and locking or unlocking areas after cleaning.

Working Conditions

The assignment is based in a remote Arctic camp, with a rotational schedule and extended time away from home. Employees must make their own way to the designated dispatch point, usually Edmonton, Alberta. Travel may be by air or ground shuttle depending on site requirements. Shifts can include nights, weekdays, weekends, and statutory holidays.

The work environment is fast-paced and physically demanding, and all site health, safety, and sanitation standards must be followed.

Schedule and Pay

The role follows a 3 weeks on / 3 weeks off rotation. Pay is hourly, starting at $19.75 per hour.

Additional Information

This posting is being used to create a pool of qualified candidates for possible future openings rather than to fill an immediate vacancy.

The employer is an equal opportunity organization and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. Accommodation related to disability can be provided during the hiring process upon request.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Capacity to stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs for long periods.
  • Comfort working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to access cabins, outbuildings, and utility entrances as needed.
  • Willingness to perform repetitive tasks and safely use cleaning equipment and materials.
  • Comfortable working 12-hour shifts in a repetitive, busy environment.
  • Ability to operate cleaning machines such as floor scrubbers and vacuums safely.

Transportation and Travel

The role requires fly-in/fly-out travel to remote Arctic sites, with possible delays caused by weather. Workers may also use a site shuttle from the dispatch point. Travel arrangements begin from Edmonton or Yellowknife, depending on the assignment.
