Role overview

The Upper School Assistant Dean of Students is a leadership position that assists the Dean of Students with student life, conduct, accountability, and overall well-being. The role requires a strong grasp of the school’s mission, vision, core values, student handbook, and related policies so they are applied consistently in daily decisions and interactions.

Focused mainly on Upper School, this position also contributes to the broader student experience across grades 6–12. The successful candidate will help build a school culture rooted in accountability, belonging, and personal growth, while serving as a dependable point of contact for students, families, and faculty. The role places special emphasis on supporting students through the growing academic, social, and personal demands of the later Upper School years. This position reports directly to the Dean of Students and works closely with the Dean and the Assistant Dean and Grade 9 Class Advisor to ensure continuity of support.

Student accountability

  • Set and reinforce strong expectations for academic performance, student leadership, integrity, and responsibility to the school community.
  • Manage student discipline under the direction of the Dean of Students, with primary attention to grades 10–12.
  • Contribute to the creation and updating of the student handbook.
  • Respond to student conduct issues and handle related communication with parents and other stakeholders.
  • Use sound judgment when addressing behavior concerns and attendance matters.
  • Keep the Dean of Students updated on student-related matters and broader campus life.
  • Maintain a visible and approachable presence during the school day and at school events.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned in support of the Dean of Students.

Student support and development

  • Act as another key contact for students, families, and faculty on matters related to student welfare, behavior, and social growth.
  • Develop strong relationships with students that encourage growth, accountability, and a sense of belonging.
  • Support students as they adapt to greater independence and responsibility in Upper School.
  • Identify emerging concerns early and respond proactively.
  • Help strengthen retention by building positive connections with students and families.
  • Contribute to evaluating and improving systems that support well-being and accountability.
  • Keep accurate records of conduct matters and disciplinary actions.
  • Perform additional duties as needed in support of the Dean of Students.

Operational support and community building

  • Work with faculty and administrators to improve student engagement and school spirit.
  • Assist with supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, assemblies, and special events.
  • Support the planning and delivery of major student-life programs and initiatives.
  • Help oversee club activities and track student participation data.
  • Assist with advisory programming and gather feedback from students and advisors.
  • Support student government and class advisors in carrying out their responsibilities.
  • Help with onboarding, orientation, and transition support for students entering and advancing through Upper School.
  • Partner with the Dean of Students and the Assistant Dean and Grade 9 Class Advisor to maintain consistent support across grade levels.
  • Assist with the Oxbridge Academy Bus Program.

Qualifications and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related discipline is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in education, with demonstrated success as part of an administrative team.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and strong judgment when handling student well-being and family concerns.
  • Proven ability to support academic transitions and contribute to program planning.
  • Excellent communication skills with students, families, faculty, and staff.
  • Direct experience working with adolescents at the secondary school level.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, counselors, administrators, and student support teams.
  • Strong organization and follow-through, with the ability to manage multiple students, deadlines, and responsibilities at once.
  • A clear commitment to advocating for students.
  • Confidence in solving problems and addressing challenges effectively.
  • Experience as a productive member of a strong team of educators.
