Job description

About the organisation

New Zealand School of Tourism is one of New Zealand’s most established private tertiary providers, focused on preparing people for careers in aviation, travel, and tourism. The institution has supported Kiwi learners for more than 35 years and places strong emphasis on integrity, inclusion, and outcomes that reflect the needs of Māori and Pasifika learners and their whānau.

The organisation values diversity and believes it is essential to creating meaningful results and positive impact in the community.

Role overview

New Zealand School of Tourism is looking for an experienced, student-centred Workplace Practice Tutor Assistant / Assessor to help deliver the online workplace practice course for the Level 5 Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management. This is a fully remote position open to candidates anywhere in New Zealand.

The appointment is fixed term for six months and is part-time at 20 hours per week. The role supports learners through assessment, feedback, academic support, and pastoral care as they complete their final course in the programme.

Key duties

  • Mark learner submissions in accordance with approved rubrics, marking guides, and grade descriptors.
  • Deliver clear, useful feedback and respond to questions related to assessments and course content.
  • Handle assessment administration such as Turnitin uploads, similarity checking, resubmissions, learner records, and supporting documents.
  • Track learner participation, attendance, and engagement, and step in early when learners appear to be at risk of disengaging.
  • Reply quickly to learner queries and communicate professionally with learners, tutors, team leaders, and support staff.
  • Oversee academic integrity matters, including AI-related flags and other integrity concerns.
  • Contribute ideas to improve course resources, assessments, quality assurance, and broader programme enhancement work.
  • Provide backup support during annual leave or sick leave when needed.

What you should bring

Applicants should have experience in teaching, tutoring, training, assessing, or learner support in a tertiary education setting. Previous industry experience in tourism, travel, hospitality, or a closely related area is also required.

You will need strong written communication skills, the ability to give constructive feedback, good organisation and time management, and the confidence to manage competing deadlines. The role also calls for the ability to build positive relationships, support learners throughout their study journey, and work comfortably with online learning platforms and digital tools.

A learner-focused mindset, commitment to academic quality, dedication to student success, and a continuous improvement approach are important for success in this role.
