Job description
Role overview
The Transportation Operations Center (TOC) acts as Amazon’s central command hub for transportation execution across the supply chain. It supports multiple regions, including North America, India, and Europe, and is responsible for keeping freight moving smoothly from vendors to fulfillment centers and from fulfillment centers to carrier hubs. When disruptions occur, the team steps in to resolve them and keeps all relevant stakeholders updated. Beyond handling day-to-day issues, the function also studies recurring exceptions, analyzes network data, and looks for opportunities to automate or improve processes.
This role has a direct effect on transportation reliability and, in turn, Amazon’s ability to deliver on time to customers.
Role purpose
A Transportation Operations Specialist helps coordinate information between carriers, hubs, warehouses, vendors, and internal teams while solving issues that could affect customer experience or business continuity. The role supports both inbound and outbound operations.
Inbound work focuses on the vendor/carrier/fulfillment center flow, helping ensure freight is collected on schedule and reaches the fulfillment center according to the appointment plan. Outbound work focuses on the fulfillment center/carrier/carrier hub flow, helping ensure trucks leave on time so customer orders can be delivered as promised.
The position requires fast, data-backed decision-making, practical logistics awareness, clear communication, and a strong drive to identify and complete process improvements.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate with outside parties such as carriers and vendors/suppliers, as well as internal groups including retail, finance, software support, and fulfillment centers.
- Retrieve and analyze information from multiple databases and systems using Excel, Access, SQL, or similar tools when required.
- Create, interpret, and apply performance metrics to help improve business outcomes.
- Define business and functional requirements for technology teams that build and enhance TOC tools and systems.
- Assess the operational impact of trends quickly and make sound decisions using the available data.
- Escalate information gaps, variances, and operational problems to the correct owners and teams, then track them through to closure.
- Manage work within tight deadlines and shifting time constraints while tracking the activities completed.
- Prepare clear verbal and written updates, including narratives on weekly findings, variances from goals, and presentations in review meetings.
- Support customers in real time within a 24/7 operating environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Prior experience with Microsoft Office products and applications is required.
- Strong command of English in speaking, reading, and writing is preferred.
- Candidate should understand logistics fundamentals and be comfortable analyzing data and trends.
- Candidate should communicate effectively in both written and spoken form.
- Candidate should be able to suggest process improvements and push them through to completion.
